BACTERIA By: Ben & Zach

Research

Research Question and Variables How does compression affect the growth of bacteria? IV Regular tile Smashed tile DV Amount of bacteria CC Hammer Temperature Light Type of tile Amount of people walking on it Space

Hypothesis If I compress bacteria then there will be less bacteria.

Procedure 1.Get two sterile Petri dishes 2.Use one piece of tape and tape one side of a lid to the Petri dish. 3.Write name or initials the Petri dish and location you will be collecting from. 4.Get two sterile swabs 5.Using rolling motion with thumb and forefinger swab the whole surface you are testing. 6. Using the same rolling motion rub lightly all over Petri dish 7. Hit the surface all over with the hammer 8. Repeat steps 5 and 6 9. Tape other side of the lid to the Petri dish 10. Do the same to the other Petri dish 11. Let the Petri dishes sit for two days and then record data

Results

Conclusion The more you smash a tile, the less bacteria will grow. My results support my hypothesis because the smashed tile only grew 2 species and had 12 squares full but the un-smashed tile had 22 squares full and 3 different species.

What we learned and questions we have. Does compression affect every surface the same? Does the hammer actually smash the bacteria? What did the compression actually do to the bacteria? Compression affects bacteria in a negative way. Compression is a good cleaning tool. Bacteria grows fast in a Petri dish. People will look at you weird if they see you hitting a tile with a hammer.

Good bye! Hope you enjoyed this presentation and learned a lot!!!
