Sample vs. Tick Absolute timeline Unchanging, regardless of tempo – Samples – Min:Secs – Time Code – Feet + Frames Relative timeline Change dynamically with the session tempo. – Bars:Beats Relative timeline Change dynamically with the session tempo. – Bars:Beats

Pro Tools Sample-based program Sample-based internal MIDI resolution of 960,00 pulses per quarter note (ppq) Tick-based internal MIDI resolution of 960 ticks per quarter note All tracks can be set to either sample or tick-based.

Sample MIDI & Tick Audio MIDI regions and events within a track will have an absolute location on the timeline. MIDI data stays fixed to the sample time, regardless of tempo or meter changes. Audio regions will be fixed to Bars Beats, and they will move more relative to the sample timeline with the tempo and meter changes.

Elastic Audio Track-based Time Compression and Expansion (TCE) Real-time or rendered Adds event markers to files for conforming the audio to a tempo map or quantize grid. Plug-in selector Track set to tick or sample-based

Elastic Audio Plug-Ins 1. Polyphonic – All purpose 2. Rhythmic – Drums 3. Monophonic – Vocals 4. Varispeed – Post-production 5. X-Form – Music, sound design & audio loop applications

Elastic Audio Analysis Waveforms will be temporarily grey while P.T. analyzes, then will be online. If you analyze a sub-set region, the entire underlying audio file will be analyzed. Detects transient events to calculate the native tempo and duration of the file in bars and beats. Analyzed files will have a check mark next to their names (DigiBase browsers)

Tempo Detection Any audio containing a regular periodic rhythm can be analyzed for tempo. Treated as tick-based files - contain timing information referenced to bars and beats. These files can be conformed to the session tempo for preview and import. No detected tempo? Sample-based files

Event Confidence Transient events are detected with varying degrees of confidence. Based on relative clarity of the transients Default event sensitivity of 100% You can adjust the event sensitivity to filter out erroneous events. Add and relocate event markers

Plug-in Virtual Instruments Real-time software plug-ins that run within P.T. using a plug-in interface. RTAS or TDM plug-ins To monitor sound? Insert the plug-in on an Auxiliary or Instrument track. Plug-in settings are saved with the session Loaded automatically with Pro Tools High resolution automation functions

RTAS vs. TDM Available on all systems: M-Powered, LE and HD) Rely on host processing power Takes up 2 additional voices/channel. May cause initial latency on HD systems. Available on HD systems only Rely on TDM hardware for processing Not affected by host CPU performance Ideal for virtual instruments. Makes full use of the DSP hardware, frees up host processor. 11 Stand-alone Virtual Instruments Software programs that run independently from P.T. and connect via ReWire. No ReWire? Core Audio, WaveDrive, or ASIO Monitor output? – Through P.T. via ReWire – Computer’s built-in sound capabilities – Directly through Digidesign hardware

Synchronic Instrument plug-in that manipulates rhythmic audio loops by slicing, dicing, and recombining audio. Multi-effects processor that synchs to MIDI Beat Clock to create in-tempo effects. 5 Modules: sound, playback, effect, Xfade, and MIDI 12 presets Load audio files into the sound module, does not process sound on a track. Load up to 12 loops

Xpand! Plug in virtual instrument 4 part multi-synthesis architecture 1,000 factory patches Not multi-timbral 6 smart knobs 28 patch categories 4 arpeggiators and 2 send effect sections 4 edit pages: Mix, Mod, Arp, FX

Hybrid RTAS software synthesizer 3 oscillators w/ 7 oscillator types 23 filter modes 256 patches 4 morph groups, phrase generator, arpeggiator Effects Page (2 per part)

ReWire Allows applications to output up to 64 internal audio streams directly into P.T. Monitor output in P.T. Record, process, and mix the output of stand-alone virtual instruments. Receive MIDI over ReWire Automatically activated when you select a stand-alone virtual instrument application.

Reason Reason User Interface resembles outboard equipment Displays audio levels of all 64 outputs Displays audio driver currently in use Contains multiple sound and effect modules

Melodyne Uno Essential Re-Wire compatible stand-alone application Pitch shifting and time stretching Correct individual notes remix and restructure entire melody tempo, or timing of a recording
