Pertanika’s Origin
The word Pertanika was derived from Pertanian (Agriculture).
UPM started as an Agriculture based institution, in line with this, the first journal to reflect ‘Pertanian’ was started off under the dynamic leadership of the first Vice Chancellor, Emeritus Prof. Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Mohd. Rashdan Baba.

9. Pertanika’s Background
Pertanika began publication in 1978 as Journal of Tropical Agricultural Science (JTAS).
In 1992, a decision was made to streamline Pertanika into 3 journals— other 2 being; Journal of Science & Technology (JST) and Journal of Social Sciences & Humanities (JSSH).
In 2007, a decision was made to place the Pertanika journals under RMC’s Publication Division to refurbish the 3 titles.
The journals were then revamped with new policies, stringent peer-review process and prominent national and international editorial boards.

10. Pertanika’s Resurgence
In 2008, Pertanika’s JTAS was indexed in SCOPUS followed by JSSH and JST being indexed in 2010 and 2011.
In 2011, all UPM journals were centralized to fall under one office viz. Journal Division, UPM Press with an aim to provide better support and to further boost the image of journals.
In 2012, six UPM’s faculty-based journals were encompassed under the Pertanika banner.
Pertanika now signifies the official emblem of all other UPM journals.

11. Pertanika’s Publication Policy
In its continuous efforts to make Pertanika a highly regarded academic journal, a Code of Ethics was developed in 2010.
To specifically address issues pertaining to publication ethics and conducts such as plagiarism, authorship and copyright, as well as other relevant matters which are apparently becoming visible.
Pertanika takes plagiarism seriously. Manuscripts received undergo an ‘Originality check’ using TurnItIn and other available software.

Publication Ethics
Plagiarism is scientific misconduct and in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behavior which is unacceptable.
Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently constitutes unethical publishing behavior.

The turn-around time* currently is around 6 months.
It aims to further reduce this to 3 to 4 months
The journal now publishes all its issues ahead of time

Submission rate enhanced substantially from 2006 to 2013, which led the journal to double its publication frequency from 2 to 4 issues.

Rapid publication of research findings.
A decision of acceptance of a manuscript is reached with in 3 months (average 12 weeks).
The elapsed time from submission to publication for an article averages 6 months.
Pertanika’s acceptance rate averaged to about 57% in the last 8 months. This also means that the Journal’s rejection rate is about 43%.

ScholarOne, by Thomson Reuters provides a comprehensive workflow management system for scholarly journals.
Its Web-based applications enable publishers to manage the submission, peer review, production, and publication processes more efficiently, increasing Pertanika’s profile among authors.
The ScholarOne Online Submission is open for only Pertanika Journal of Tropical Agricultural Science (JTAS).
The Submission system for JST and JSSH is yet to be launched. You may submit your manuscripts to these two journals via to the Chief Executive Editor.
