4 INTRODUCTION Examples (ia) It's hard to find someone [ who you can relate to] (ib) Can you think of things [ which she might need] Description The relative pronoun refers to an antecedent, but it also moves from some position in the relative clause. Assumptions I. Relative clauses are CPs headed by a complementizer that/for/ø which has an edge feature triggering movement of a relative pronoun to spec-C. II. A relative pronoun in spec-C receives null spellout in the PF component in infinitive clauses and optionally in finite clauses. (Relative Pronoun Spellout Condition) III. An overt complementizer cannot have an overt specifier. (Complementizer Condition) 10/26/12 4 ANTH3590/7590, Harry Howard, Tulane
