Computer & Internet History By: Brandon Taylor

The Very First Computer Built between 1939-1942 Iowa State University John Atanasoff and student Clifford Berry.

Debugging Finding and reducing the number of bugs or defects in a program. Attributed to Admiral Grace Hopper in 1940.

Beginning of Internet It was introduced in 1962. It was a project for the Department of Defense. Designed to allow remote control of nuclear weapons in the case that the city they were located in was destroyed.

Babbage’s Analytical Engine This analytical engine, the first fully-automatic calculating machine, was constructed by British computing pioneer Charles Babbage (1791-1871), who first conceived the idea of an advanced calculating machine to calculate and print mathematical tables in 1812. Conceived by him in 1834, this machine was designed to evaluate any mathematical formula and to have even higher powers of analysis than his original Difference engine of the 1820s. Only part of the machine as a trial piece was completed before Babbage's death in 1871.

Tabulating Machine Summarizing information Herman Hollerith Help process for the 1890 U.S. Census.

ENIAC Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer Solve computer problems. University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School of Electrical Engineering.

Computer Program Set of ordered instructions that enable a computer to carry out a specific task. A program is prepared by first formulating the task and then expressing it in an appropriate programming language. Programmers may work in machine language or in assembly languages.

Transistor Replacing Vacuum Tubes Transistors switch and modulate electronic current. The vacuum tube, used to amplify music and voice, made long-distance calling practical, but the tubes consumed power, created heat and burned out rapidly, requiring high maintenance.

The SOL Microcomputer Processor Technology from 1976 to 1978. Designed by Joe's brother Lee, who worked for Processor Tech in Berkeley.

Binary System Only uses 0 and 1 Invented 3 centuries back. The binary system underlies modern technology of electronic digital computers. (1101) 2 = 8 + 4 + 1 = 13 ( = (13) 10.
