4 Value of Certification
Recognition Differentiation Employability Microsoft is celebrating the 20 year anniversary of Microsoft Certification as of January Microsoft Certification has been around that long because certifications have value. People earn them in order to gain proof of job skills, get recognized by their peers, or to differentiate themselves from other job candidates. IT Pros Certifications enable you to be better prepared to get a job. Certifications also increase visibility/marketability of individuals who have earned them Proof points: In a survey of 700 IT professionals last November, 60% said certification led to a new job. Certifications differentiate you from your peers which helps you get ahead In that same survey, 58% said certification led to a salary boost or bonus, 63% said it led to a promotion Certifications also provide recognition of your knowledge & skills not just to employers, but also to peers Hiring Managers Today’s technology landscape shows a continued need for highly skilled technical people. In a survey of over 200 technology executives worldwide, 92% of respondents indicate it is challenging for IT organizations to secure the necessary skills for large infrastructure Certifications provide documented level of assurance that employees are competent 81% of Hiring Managers feel that certified individuals perform better, according to our own MCP survey The regular assessment process will improve staff responsibility, commitment and motivation 79% of Hiring manager agree that certified individuals are more efficient. The majority of hiring managers consider certification as a factor when they are looking at resumes. It’s not necessarily going to trump work experience, but if you’re being compared to someone with work experience and no certification, you look like the better candidate when you have both.

5 Changes to the Certifications and Exams
Relevance Broader Skill Set Rigor Certification Requirements Recertification Deeper Skill Set While the reasons for earning a certification may not have changed over the last 20 years, we need to continue to strengthen the benefits of certification. Microsoft has re-invented its certification program and is introducing a new wave of certifications to ensure people remain relevant, and to make our certifications even more valuable and meaningful to achieve than ever before. Cloud solutions introduce a need for a BROADER RANGE of skills. Microsoft Certifications now validate a broader set of skills and experience across a technology solutions rather than an individual technology. Microsoft cloud services are continuously updated with the latest technology solutions. Microsoft’s certification program also places an emphasis on cutting edge technology skills sets and introduces the need for IT Pros and Developers to be up to-date on the latest technologies. Therefore Microsoft cert must continually validate current skill sets. CLOUD COMPUTING ultimately allows IT Pros & developers to FOCUS ON MISSION CRITICAL ACTIVITIES for organizations. THIS RAISES THE BAR OF REQUIRED EXPERTISE for IT Pro and Developers. Microsoft’s reinvented certifications test on a DEEPER set of knowledge that is mapped to real-world business context. Rather than testing only on a feature of a technology, people are now tested on MORE ADVANCED SKILLS and DEEPER UNDERSTANDING of the technology. That’s why Microsoft has reinvented its certification program - to ensure IT Pros and Developers have the expertise necessary to be productive in the cloud and to ensure that the key benefits of certification continue to remain relevant.

8 MCSE: Business Intelligence
Showcase your expert skills at developing and deploying rich business intelligence solutions. Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert: Business Intelligence = Exam 467: Designing Business Intelligence Solutions with SQL Server 2012 + Deliver more data to more people across the organization. Exam 466: Implementing Data Models and Reports with SQL Server 2012 + Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate: SQL Server 2012 The MCSE: Business Intelligence certification showcases your expert skills at developing and deploying visually-rich business intelligence solutions and reports. Deliver more data to more people across the organization. Note that the certification title has no version number or product name, but the exam names do. MCSE covers multiple versions and multiple products. Our certifications used to validate that the candidate had the skills and experience with one technology. The truth of the matter is that a candidate called to manage Business Intelligence solutions at work actually works across multiple technologies. In the case of MCSE: BI, we offer a certification that validates that a candidate has the skills and experience with the entire solution, including Sharepoint, SQL Azure, and Excel in addition to SQL Server 2012. Recertification required every three years. Deliver invaluable self-service BI applications (BI Professionals) Future proof your BI expertise with advanced-level BI Professional Certification, your gateway to the skills and techniques to design, build and deploy solutions that deliver more data to more people across the organization.

9 MCSE: Data Platform = + +
Demonstrate your expertise at building enterprise-scale data solutions. Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert: Data Platform = Exam 465: Designing Database Solutions for SQL Server 2012 + Extend your skills beyond traditional database capabilities. Exam 464: Developing SQL Server 2012 Databases + Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate: SQL Server 2012 The MCSE: Data Platform certification demonstrates your expertise at building enterprise-scale data solutions across on-premises or cloud environments. Note that the certification title has no version number or product name, but the exam names do. Recertification required every three years Extend your skills beyond traditional database capabilities by earning the MCSE: Data Platform certification. MCSA: SQL Server 2012 is a Pre-requisite certification: validates core technology skills on SQL Server 2012

10 Database roles convergence
At least 60% of both DBAs and DBDs were at least minimally proficient at SSAS and PowerShell. At least 87% of both DBAs and DBDs were at least minimally proficient at SSIS, SSRS, and T-SQL. On which tools are most DBAs and DBDs proficient? 87% of database developers indicated that they had acted as a database administrator at some point in the past. 60% of database developers indicated that they perform database administration tasks as part of their current role, though it is not their primary role. Do DBDs act as DBAs? Backup and restore Create tables Installation Which tasks do a majority of both DBAs and DBDs perform? Performance tuning Ad-hoc queries Integration services (data quality) We did a lot of research as we developed the certifications for SQL Server 2012, including an audience survey that delved into what skill levels people in different roles had for specific tasks and tools. We discovered some pretty interesting stuff. This research was validated through other surveys and research as well, when we determined what the specific objectives should be. this research is the foundation of the decision to combine the DBA/DBD roles from previous certs into the new DB Platform path.  As we mentioned earlier when we talked about the MCSA, we identified a set of skills that BI developers, database developers, AND database administrators all needed to be at least minimally proficient at—these are the skills represented in the MCSA: SQL Server In addition to the skills shared by all three roles, there was a significant overlap between the tasks/tools at which DBAs needed to be proficient, and those at which DBDs needed to be proficient. The skills at which only DBDs were proficient tended to be more pure developer skills, such as .NET development. The skills at which DBAs alone were proficient tended to be ones that will become less frequent as cloud becomes more prevalent. The new MCSE certifications are really forward-looking, and extend beyond the traditional database capabilities. External articles also reflect the evolution of database roles:

11 Recertification ensures up-to-date skills
Proves latest skills in the solution area Protects your cert from being devalued Replaces upgrade at expert level Recertifying also earns you the new MCSA MCSEs will need to recertify every three years In most cases, requirement will be one exam Transcript will show upcoming inactive date Expert-level cert names not versioned Recert proves latest skills in a solution area—which may include a new release of the primary technology or related technologies. Protects your cert from being devalued by those who claim to be certified but do not update their skills. At MCSE level: no upgrade, only recert. If you stay current today through an upgrade path, then this will feel very similar. At the expert level, you will not need to earn another cert on the new version. You will simply maintain the one you have. When you recertify your MCSE, you’ll also earn the most recent MCSA, if a new version of the MCSA has been released since you first earned your MCSE or since you last recertified. The new expert-level certifications don’t have a version number in the names. This is because they are testing at the solution level and across technologies. For example, we might test skills on multiple versions of a product if that corresponds with what the enterprise environment looks like. By contrast, at the MCSA level, there is no recert, only upgrade, there is a version number in cert title. In most cases, the requirement will be one exam. We are looking at other options such as continuing education credits, but for now we are planning to require an exam. We’ll remind you about a year ahead, but you will always be able to see your upcoming inactive date on your transcript Different frequency for dev and IT Pro based on survey of over 900 customers last summer

12 More challenging item types
Extending Matching items Code Review Case Studies Choose All That Apply Active Screen Drag & Drop Build Lists Best Answer !Be sure to view the exam item type demo to see these item types! You’ll see a wide variety of question types in our exams, which makes our exams feel more real-world and challenging. Multiple choice items are just the beginning. Extended matching presents the same list of answers in multiple questions. Code review is for developer exams, and requires you to answer a series of questions about a sample application. Case studies are typically used in IT Pro exams, and present information about a company and its IT environment, and you need to identify the best solution to meet a particular goal. Choose all that apply is quite self-explanatory, as is best answer. Active screen, drag and drop, and build list are all question types that require you to interact with the item on the screen by dragging an item or clicking on an image. We are also working on a new item type that will begin to appear in SQL exams in June. In this item type, candidates will be presented with a scenario that requires them to return specific results from a set of tables. The candidate is required to type in a T-SQL query to accomplish the goal statement in the question.

If you passed Exams and , or you have achieved the MCTS: Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Implementation and Maintenance and the MCTS: SQL Server 2008, Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance certifications, you automatically earn the Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) certification on SQL Server 2008. How do these changes impact my existing Microsoft Certifications? The existing MCTS, MCITP, and MCPD Certifications are currently valuable in the market and will remain valuable as long as companies are using the technology covered in your certification. How long will I be able to earn an MCITP or MCTS Certification on SQL Server 2008? After April 2013, you will no longer be able to achieve an MCTS or MCITP certification on SQL Server However, the MCSA: SQL Server 2008 will still be available to earn. What happens if I pass a single exam? When you pass a single exam, you become a member of the Microsoft Certification Program. You can share your transcript with others to prove that you passed that exam and show your progress towards a specific certification.

25 More frequently asked questions
Answer What is the recertification requirement? To ensure that our certifications remain a meaningful and valuable indicator of candidate’s skills, Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) certifications will require recertification every three years. Why is this recertification requirement being implemented? Recertification ensures that Microsoft Certifications remain a meaningful and valuable indicator of candidate’s skills. Recertification provides assurance to hiring managers and other stakeholders that certified candidates have demonstrated continued competence even as the technology has changed based on service packs, revisions, and new product version releases. Will MCSA certifications require recertification also? The recertification requirement does not apply to Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) certifications. Why did you raise the expectations for minimum skills? We raised the minimum expectations in order to recognize and validate the full set of skills that a candidate would need to successfully work with across a technology solution and included topics relevant to working with solutions in the cloud. By increasing the minimum expectations and the skills validated, individuals will be more successful in working with Microsoft technologies and better able to satisfy the needs of the organization. How did you make the exams more challenging? There are many aspects to a candidate's perception of how challenging an exam is. We made changes to our certification program to address each of those aspects, including setting the bar higher for minimum experience that we expect from successful candidates, validating more difficult skills, using more challenging question types, and implementing security enhancements in our exams and test centers.
