Balancing Redox Reactions with Oxidation Numbers (see p 462) 1.Assign oxidation number 2.Identify oxidation and reduction 3.Determine the # of e- lost and gained per atom or ion, then multiply by subscripts to determine the number of electrons transferred.

4.Determine the lowest common multiple for electrons from step 3. 5.Multiply the electrons by a coefficient required to reach the lowest common multiple. Place the coefficients into the equation. 6.Balance other atoms by inspection if possible

For Neutral Environments: add H2O to balance O and H atoms as needed For Acidic Environments: add H2O to balance O atoms add H+ to balance H atoms
