2 PAKISTAN STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION
A classification can be defined as a structured listing to describe various economic activities in a standardized format. The main purpose is to provide a set of activity categories that can be utilized for the production of statistics according to such activities. Classifications are used for collection and presentation of data for researchers and planners for critical evaluation and use for economic policy making and future planning. Till 2007, Pakistan had been using Pakistan Standard Industrial Classification PSIC 1970 comparable with ISIC2.

3 PAKISTAN STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION
In order to meet the national requirements on account of changes in the structure of economy and Pakistan Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (PSIC) was developed in line with UN International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC Rev 3.1). PSIC 2007 fully compares with ISIC Rev 3.1 at 2 and 3 digit levels and generally compares at 4 digit level. Where deemed necessary a fifth digit has been added to further subdivide the PSIC class into PSIC sub-class to better capture the most important economic activities.

FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS Improvement in the standardized system of classification of economic activities is essential not only for meaningful collection of data relating to such activities but also for ensuring comparability of statistics at national as well as regional and international levels. Pakistan is making efforts for improving the standard industrial classification to keep pace with the changes in the organization and structure of industries besides accounting for emerging economic activities. UN ISIC Rev.4 would bring in major structural changes in the industrial classification. Pakistan would accordingly improve its Industrial Classification as per ISIC Rev.4.
