13. THE HIJRA: A TURNING POINT Many threatened to murder Muhammad, so Muhammad and his followers left Mecca to Yathrib ( Medina). This journey is known as the hijra. The hijra was a turning point for Islam because in Medina, Muhammad was welcomed by Muslims as law giver and God’s prophet. In 630, Muhammad returned to Mecca and defeated those who opposed him.
