HOW TO LEAD BY EXAMPLE IF YOU CAN’T LEAD YOURSELF, YOU CANNOT LEAD OTHERS

COMMITMENT HOW TO GET AND KEEP YOURSELF MOTIVATED To be an effective leader you must be committed. You must be willing to invest yourself completely. You must give your time, energy, and passion to help your team pursue its goals. Your heart must be completely in it. A leader in our program feels it. It is something they want to do – not have to do.

COMMITMENT HOW TO GET AND KEEP YOURSELF MOTIVATED What’s Possible for US? Team goals – Staff goals for team What’s different, what’s similar? How badly do you want to achieve this goal? What are you willing to do to achieve it? Do you have the grit necessary to follow through? Who will you be letting down if you do not follow through?

COMMITMENT HOW TO GET AND KEEP YOURSELF MOTIVATED ARE YOU COMPLIANT – COMMITTED – COMPELLED? COMPLIANT – COMMITTED - COMPELLED RESISTANT – RELUCTANT - EXISTENT

COMMITMENT HOW TO GET AND KEEP YOURSELF MOTIVATED Resistant They (or their parents, who influence them) have their own stubborn view of how things should be done. They complain about coaches, the program, the weight lifting program, the offense, the defense, etc. Reluctant Not yet willing to buy into our goal – wait and see people. I need results before I really try. They won’t commit because they’re not sure if it is going to pay off. Existent Show up. That’s it. Go through the motions. Play with no enthusiasm. Compliant Do what they’re told by coaches and captains. They do enough to maintain their role on the team, never going above the call of duty. Need constant motivation. Committed Willingly participate in team goals. Self-motivated. They don’t need to be babysat in the weight room to make sure they complete their stupid card. They GET THE JOB DONE. Compelled These people FIND A WAY! No matter the obstacle, adversity, or distraction. They won’t rest until the job is done. They do not skip workouts, they relentlessly pursue excellence, hold themselves and teammates accountable.

COMMITMENT HOW TO GET AND KEEP YOURSELF MOTIVATED In which category are you right now? Why? Where do you think your teammates would rate you? Where you do you think myself and the other coaches would rate you? Where do you honestly want to be?

COMMITMENT HOW TO GET AND KEEP YOURSELF MOTIVATED Leaders Must be Committed or Compelled Leaders can fall in either category It is MORE important where your coaches and teammates rated you – they will follow you! You are the one who chooses what category you fall into.

COMMITMENT HOW TO GET AND KEEP YOURSELF MOTIVATED 3 Keys to Success Work hard – not as easy as it sounds It takes sacrifice – consistent work People won’t always understand Our community (as well as most communities) is filled with laziness, jealousy, and a desire to be average!
