Environmental Considerations Rope rescue is inherently dangerous and requires performance of rigorous activities under adverse conditions. Regional and National Safety standards should be referenced and utilized as guiding references. BE PREPARED!!! Knowledge Skills Abilities Requirements established by the AHJ.

Be Prepared Knowledge Rope rescue is a dynamic entity with technological and application based advances being made on a daily basis. Be a lifelong student of your discipline Develop a diverse education that is open minded but firmly founded in sound theory. Gain experience. There are no greater lessons learned than those that resulted from practical application.

Be Prepared Skills and Abilities Repetition creates reliable actions and decision making abilities based on muscle memory and cognitive recall. Technical rescue skills require consistent maintenance and conditioning to insure that performance will be optimal when the incident occurs. Strive to be well versed in all applications of rope rescue to prevent abilities from becoming stagnate.

Be Prepared AHJ Requirements Age Medical standards Physical fitness EMS capabilities Education Haz Mat awareness ***Mental and Social health and awareness

Environments Rural Suburban Urban

Environments Preplan potential locations Access Exposure Application Hazards Anchors “HE triple A”

Above Ground Access Personnel and Equipment Exposure Probable Victims and their capabilities / injuries Applications Techniques, Tactics, and Equipment Cache Hazards Natural Hazards (Weather, Terrain) Man made Hazards (Cell Towers, Utilities) Anchors Strength, Stability, Location

Below Ground Access Personnel and Equipment Exposure Probable Victims and their capabilities / injuries Applications Techniques, Tactics, and Equipment Cache Hazards Natural Hazards (Weather, Terrain, Hazardous Atmosphere) Man made Hazards (Vaults, Confined Spaces, Utilities) Anchors Strength, Stability, Location

At Grade Defined as “Low Angle” events Loads are manipulated horizontally Primary applications involve grades or slopes that are less than 30 degrees and provide stable footing. May involve tending personnel to facilitate load manipulation. Often implemented in haz mat events to manipulate multiple loads through zones to minimize decon requirements.
