1 What is Wireless Networking? Wireless Networking is simply – Transmitting data between devices using radio waves Broadcast Television Stations and Radio Stations

2 What is Wireless Networking? What does wireless “B”, and “G” mean? – Wireless “B” – 802.11b Data Transmission speed of up to 11Mbs – Wireless “G” – 802.11g Data Transmission speed of up to 54Mbs

3 Advantages of Wireless Networking NO WIRES! – No crawling in the attic to hang wires Easy to change configuration – Move a computer from one room to another or between floors Easy expandability – Add new computers and wireless printers to the network Lower cost associated with a changing environment

4 Disadvantages of Wireless Networking Prone to interference – Many portable telephones and some cellular phones – Some kitchen appliances – Some structural materials degrade signal Distance from Access Point – Some buildings have poor signal transmission distances – Building can have “Cold” spots where no signal can reach Poor Security
