Verona Public Schools Why is my child taking PARCC ? PARCC is part of the state and federally-funded program of education provided to your child at HBW. –Federal and state law require New Jersey students to take an assessment that measures college and career readiness grades 3 through 11. New Jersey has had a long history of establishing state standards for instruction and assessment to help schools ensure that students are meeting educational goals. –Standards are what we expect students to know in individual grades. –Curriculum is how we operationalize those goals into learning. PARCC is aligned with the Common Core and more accurately gauges students’ progress in achieving these new standards. –NJASK incorporated common core concepts in its last two years as a logical step in the transition.

Verona Public Schools What Technology are we using with PARCC? Desktop Dell Computers and Google Chromebooks at the Elementary Schools Students are currently working on the tutorial and practice tests in mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) Setting and technology which they are familiar : –Typing on a keyboard –Mouse –Using (in ELA) multiple sources at once (primary source, a video, a secondary source) –Accommodations for students overall (eliminate answer choices, highlighting tool, spell checker, and more) –Accommodations for students with disabilities (begin with slide 13)

Verona Public Schools How long do PARCC tests take? Unit Testing Time is the amount of time any student who needs it must be provided to complete the unit. It is the amount of testing time schools must schedule for each unit. –Longest unit: 90 minutes Performance DivisionNew Jersey Department of Education7

Verona Public Schools How is PARCC Scored? 8 PBA + EOY = Total Score One total score report for Math One total score report for ELA

States remain in complete control of student information … –Neither the PARCC consortium nor the federal government will have access to individual student information. 10

Verona Public Schools How Can Parents Support Verona Schools with PARCC? Please remind your children about getting a good night’s sleep, eating a healthy breakfast, and doing the best they can! Take the online tutorial, sample questions, and practice tests (we will provide that opportunity tonight), and share your problem solving thoughts with your children. Be supportive, encouraging, open-minded, and understanding!

Verona Public Schools How will PARCC results be used? ●To assist teachers in supporting students (along with our daily (formative) and summative assessments) ●To inform parents and students on progress towards ‘on track’ college and career readiness ●To inform schools and districts on curricula, instructional and professional development needs 12

Verona Public Schools PARCC Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Libby Skinner Director of Special Services

Verona Public Schools Additional Accommodations For students with an IEP, 504 Plan, or are in an ELL program, –A PNP (Personal Needs Profile) has been developed based on learner needs. 14

Verona Public Schools Good news! All accommodations utilized previously for NJASK or HSPA are still available (and then some)! Your case manager should have contacted you if a change to your child’s IEP or 504 needed to be made!

Verona Public Schools You would have heard from your case manager if: Additional accommodations beyond the accessibility features are required, such as… 1.Presentation, 2.Response, or 3.Timing/Scheduling Accommodations

Verona Public Schools 1. Presentation Accommodations If a student is blind, has a visual impairment, or is deaf, then a necessary change in presentation of the PARCC assessment would be necessary. Do not worry! If you do not hear from your Child Study Team case manager, this does not apply to your child.

Verona Public Schools 2. Response Accommodations If your child needs accommodations related to: –Braille, –Requires a calculator on non-calculator sections, –Utilizes a scribe or dictation This means your child needs an additional response accommodation.

Verona Public Schools 3. Timing/Scheduling Accommodations Generally the same here… Extended time Separate or alternate location(s) Small group testing Frequent breaks

Verona Public Schools Still unsure your child has all s/he needs? Please reach out to your Child Study Team Case Manager. We will make sure your child has everything in place in order to be successful!
