1. Migrant and seasonal farmworkers (MSFW's) are a vital asset to the U.S. $200 billion agricultural industry, which is one of the primary industries in the State of Oregon. Thousands of MSFW’s in the state harvest the abundant fruits and vegetables that thrive there, so the country can have daily at their table delicious, healthy, plentiful and affordable foods. Unfortunately, these extremely vulnerable, hard-working, proud people and their families, lack availability and accessibility to affordable health care services, even though they are among the most medically indigent persons and have the poorest health of any group in the United States. The purpose of this presentation is to show some of the ways how they are neglected in regards to their health outcomes, and also show some of the efforts certain groups are making to help this disadvantaged community. Migrant Health Facts: The U.S. Public Health Service estimates that a total of 3.5 million MSFW’s live and work in the United States. It is estimated that 174,484 work in Oregon (2002) The major MSFW concentrations are found in the Northwest part of the state around the Willamette Valley, in the Hood River Valley, the Columbia River Basin, Southern & Southeastern Oregon Migrant workers currently suffer from mortality and morbidity rates greater than the majority of the general population in the United States. La Clínica first opened its doors in Hood River, Oregon in 1986 as the region's first migrant health center, primarily to provide medical services to the area's migrant farm workers. Within the first two years, La Clínica recognized that many other people living in the community needed better access to high quality, affordable health care, and were designated as a Community and Migrant Health Center shortly thereafter. Website: http://www.lcdcfh.org/ Virginia García Memorial Health Center - In 1975, the Virginia Garcia Health Center was dedicated to the memory of Virginia Garcia, age six, of Mission, Texas, whose short life, and death in Oregon, changed health care services to Latinos in Oregon forever. Accompanying her farmworker parents to Oregon to pick strawberries, Virginia Garcia spent her last days in a migrant labor camp near the city of North Plains. There she developed blood poisoning from a simple foot wound, and although attempts were made to treat her, the unavailability of cultural, and language appropriate medical services ultimately resulted in her death. Stunned by this tragedy, community leaders of the Hispanic and medical communities joined forces in an unprecedented effort to insure that such a tragedy would never be repeated. It annually provides over 25,000 medical visits to the medically needy through its four Washington, and Yamhill county locations. One of their most visited facilities is Salud Medical Center located in the city of Woodburn, OR, where more than a 50% of the population are of latino, and is also home to one of the largest migrant and seasonal communities in the state.
