3  John (Revelation 1:1, 4, 9; 22:8) John is also the author of the gospel according to John, as well as 1 John, 2 John, & 3 John. John was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus along with his brother James  Matthew 4:18-22 and Mark 3:14-19 records the calling of John as a disciple  James and John were nicknamed “The Sons of Thunder”

4  John directed this prophetic word to seven selected churches in the Roman province of Asia (1:3-4)  Because of John’s effective witnessing for Christ, Roman authorities exiled him to the small, desolate island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea (1:9)
