“Carbon nanotubes reinforced aluminum nanocomposite via plasma spray forming” Mustafa K. Ismael Metallurgical Engineering Supervisors Republic of Iraq Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research University of Technology Production and Metallurgy engineering Baghdad-Iraq Prof. Dr.Ahmad A. 2 Introduction  Aluminum matrix composite reinforced by CNTs. Thermal spray EPD. Other cold processes (supersonic spray). The unique properties of carbon nanotubes can be exploited in metal- matrix composite (MMCs), because their exceptional resilience, carbon nanotubes might be practically desirable as reinforcement for (MMCs). Why Al-Si composites? high strength, high stiffness, wear and corrosion resistance. Aerospace, automobile, electronic industries, defense.

Aim of this Work  Preparation of nanocomposite coating layer, and investigate of their mechanical and physical properties.

Proposed Research 1- Synthesis CNTs  Arc-discharge Vaporization of carbon between two graphite electrodes, at pressure of Helium or/and Argon ~500 Torr, current supply between small gap 50-200 A, at ~20V.  CVD 2- Purification process Nanotubes are contaminated with catalyst particles and support material.

3- Mixing Purified CNTs with deferent amount blended with powder of Aluminum-Silicon hypereutectic alloy. 4- composite coating a-Plasma spry Al-Si alloy with different amount of CNTs spray by Arc-plasma, on substrate of series 6000 aluminum. b- Electrophoretic deposition (EPD)

5- Examination and Tests  SEM, TEM, AFM, XRF, XRD  Nanoindentation to evaluate hardness and elastic modulus.  Bending test to evaluate bond coat strength.  Other such as; thermal conductivity.

Research Problem 1-Thermal process is limited spraying of nanocomposite material because of high tendency to form clogs at plasma gun nozzle.  solution precursor plasma spray process (SPPS) to enhanced this elimination. 2- Coating of aluminum substrate is restricted to cold process, so other thermal process such as CVD are excluded.
