Times Beach, Missouri Jin xiaowei & Wang xinni Environmental Geotechnology

Introduction --a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri --2,240 residents --was primarily a summer resort --was completely evacuated early in 1983 due to Dioxin

--Dioxin is one of the most toxic chemicals known to science. --Two Benzene rings connected by two oxygen atoms --Produced in many industrial processes The most toxic compound : 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin or TCDD. Dioxin

Health Problems The road to Times Beach -- Does dioxin cause cancer? Yes!!! -- Dioxin can also cause severe reproductive and developmental problems --A powerful hormone disrupting chemical -- Dioxin is well-known for its ability to damage the immune system

The Reason for Dioxin Contamination Due to its 23 miles of dirt roads and lack of pavement funds, the city of Times Beach hired waste hauler Russell Bliss to oil the roads in and around the town in 1971. On December 5, 1982, the Meramec River flooded, causing an evacuation as more than 95% of the city was covered with 10 feet or more of water. On December 23, 1982, the EPA announced it had identified dangerous levels of dioxin in Times Beach's soil.

Cleanup Approach Stabilisation: The remedies selected by the EPA in 1984 to stabilise Times Beach. Relocation: This cleanup phase addressed the permanent relocation of residents and businesses and the acquisition of all remaining properties.

Rotary kiln incinerator The rotary kiln incinerator is manufactured with a rotating combustion chamber that keeps waste moving, thereby allowing it to vaporize for easier burning.
