VSEPR Theory Geometry of Molecules
2
Why do we care??? What is VSEPR theory? Shape of molecules determines:
Valence shell electron-pair repulsion theory—states that repulsion between the sets of valenc- level electrons surrounding an atom causes these sets to oriented as far apart as possible. Shape of molecules determines: Polarity Solubility Reactivity
3
Examples Draw Lewis structures for the following molecules: H2O BF3
CH4 NH3 PCl5 SF6
4
There are many other sub-shapes that are formed due to lone pairs.

Practice Identify the geometries of the following molecules: AsF5 SeF6
CF4 NO3-

Hybridization Draw orbital notation for Carbon.
Why doesn’t carbon bond with two things if it has two free valence electrons? Why is carbon different from boron, which bonds with three things? Answer: Hybridization.
