Topologies for compact converters Frank Bryan Power Conversion Group, University of Manchester Frank.Bryan@manchester.ac.uk Work package 1.3.1
2
Research interests DC-DC converters for mobile applications Integrating construction for increased power density Packaging and layout of converter prototypes New construction techniques
3
Work package aims: Identify and assess DC-DC topologies for multi-kW, low voltage operation (<1 kV) Utilise emerging WBG devices Exploit material characteristics for compact conversion Project objectives: Prototype shortlist of topologies Significantly increase the switching frequency over state of the art examples Utilise soft switching techniques to increase efficiency and allow further frequency increases
4
Project plan: Identified three suitable topologies Specified and simulated candidates Constructing a flexible test bed to implement candidate topologies Awaiting components
5
Development opportunities: New converter topologies Sensing and control of high frequency converters Construction and combination of passive components Integrating passive components and switching devices Design trade offs for design optimisation
6
Project exploitation: Increased power density allows increased power delivery or reduced mass and volume for space critical and mobile applications Reduced losses using WBG devices and smaller passive components. Ongoing research links with Rolls Royce and Prodrive and IST Power
