Bryan Winterhalter EDTC 601 1.6 Analyzing Views About Blogs and Wikis

Section 1 Blogs

Section 1: Blogs Advantages of blogging in the classroom  Less personal  Less control for the teacher on what is posted for the class to see  Equity issues  Grading for large or multiple classes Disadvantages of blogging in the classroom  Hyperlinks to helpful sites  Students can become “experts” in their field  Different ways to participate in learning  Allows for diverse perspectives  Shy students can think through a response before posting to the class

Section 1: Blogs For my classroom, I would chose WordPress as the best blog host. WordPress, with a little practice, is easy to use. It has a look and feel that is similar to a normal website, easy to organize and user friendly. With the add free option, it allows the teacher to offer a professional website at little cost.

Section 1: Blogs  Blogs are currently being integrated into the classroom setting is a variety of ways. Teachers are using them to gain feedback from students away from the classroom, allowing student to post projects, thoughts, as well as questions. Blogs are being used by teachers to post helpful links, and probing questions.

Section 2 Wikis

Section 2: Wikis Advantages of using wikis in the classroom  Wikis are easy to use  Students can upload files, videos and link for the class and teacher to see  Teacher can see recent changes to the wiki  Not very technical Disadvantages of using wikis in the classroom  Students can post almost anything, including non- educational material  Students must be able to get online to participate  Other student’s work can be deleted or changed  Only one person at a time may edit

Section 2: Wikis  The best wiki host for my educational setting is wikispaces. This is a free site that is easy to use, simple to navigate and allows for a large variety of material that may be uploaded. With its simple layout and navigation sidebar, students can find correct pages quickly and effectually.

Section 2: Wikis  Wikis are currently being used in the classroom by teachers willing to share control of the website with their students. I have found that most interactive wikis are being used by high school an higher education students. Here, students are able to post projects, photos, and homework. Some wikis have incorporated blogs as well, benefiting from the best of both worlds.

Section 3 My View of Blogs and Wikis in the Classroom

Section 3: Blogs and Wikis in the Classroom  Blogs would be beneficial in my classroom by allowing students to share their thoughts and gain participation points if absent from class. Blogs would also allow for a discussion among students that are in different classes. Blogs can allow a chance for my shy students to share their thoughts without being interrupted by other louder students.

Section 3: Blogs and Wikis in the Classroom  I might integrate blogging into my classroom next year by starting with lab book reflections. After completing a lab, I will post a question and have a discussion around a hypothetical situation that would be an extension of the completed lab. This would also be a nice place to allow the class to brain storm other possible experiments outside of class, and use class time to work on the labs.

Section 3: Blogs and Wikis in the Classroom  Wikis would be beneficial in my classroom by allowing student to share lab data with the rest of the class. Digital projects can be posted by students and comments can be written by their peers with out having to use classroom time.

Section 3: Blogs and Wikis in the Classroom  I might integrate wikis into my classroom next year by hosting a lab book wiki. Currently students are required to buy a composition book and record their labs there. These books get lost, writing is hard to read, and students are with out them when I am grading them. If I use a wiki as a lab book, students can upload their graphs, data tables, procedures and entire lab online. I would not have to bring home piles of lab books, and students can have access to them at all times.
