2 Purpose of this workshop: –Review of immigration status –What is SEVIS? –What is SEVIS II? –How will SEVIS II affect students? –How will OIP assist?

4 Status Status is a legal condition, not a physical thing It is dynamic It can be acquired, maintained, changed, and lost Students must be proactive I-20’s, electronic records, visa stamps are indicators of status

5 Maintaining Status Fulltime enrollment from start date to end date (unless you have been authorized to attend part-time) Request permission before dropping Finish degree by end date Never work without authorization If on OPT, report employment

6 Maintaining status, cont’d… Report address changes within 10 days of change Keep immigration documents current (passport, I-20); visa may be expired Stay in contact with OIP

7 What is SEVIS? The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is a web-based program to track and monitor U.S. schools and programs, students, exchange visitors and their dependents throughout the duration of their studies and OPT (if applicable) SEVIS was implemented on January 30, 2003

8 TODAY’S SEVIS: Only accessed by school & government officials I-20s / DS-2019s are a paper version of an electronic SEVIS record Students have multiple SEVIS record numbers (in some cases) I-20s must be signed to demonstrate valid status

9 TODAY’S SEVIS, cont’d… –Students must report changes of address, major, etc to school officials who update SEVIS

12 SEVIS II SEVIS II was scheduled to be released February 2010 Postponed to April 2010 On April 6, 2010, SEVIS announced that there is no set date for the release Possible pending deadline for student use

13 Highlights of SEVIS II Responsibility shifts from UTEP to students Paperless system Creation of unique Immigration Identification Number (IIN) All international students and scholars create and have direct access to maintain their own immigration record I-20’s / DS-2019s will eventually be eliminated Visa will be scanned at port of entry & customs databases will indicate green, yellow or red

14 Impact on Current Students Have to create and maintain their SEVIS II online accounts Need additional support to adapt to new changes Students will have to update addresses on their own Students will be able to check if they are admissible to enter the country NOTE: We have address change forms
