3 Three Most Common Speech Disorders VoiceFluency Articulation *Speech = sounds used to form words/Language = words used to form sentences and thoughts.

4 Students with speech problems may be difficult to understand in the classroom. The most severe students also may sometimes struggle with spelling and the ability to read accurately and fluently. 2 nd Grade Student at Hassan

5 Identification* Developmental Errors Duel Language Learner* Monitor/Practice A student has a sound error just outside developmental limits, e.g. the 's/z' sound for a 1st grade student These errors may correct on their own given periodic reminders and practice

6 Special Education for a Speech Disorder  Basic Sound Errors, e.g./l, r, s/  Students may receive:  Training for placement  Drill practice several times per week depending on the severity of the problem  Home practice packets  Students are gone from general education classes for much shorter time!  Grade levels are scheduled for blocks of time (vs. by individual student) to reduce run-around time e.g. most 4 th graders are seen between 10:20-11:00 am 5-Minute Therapy Intensive Therapy  Students who have more severe problems with speech intelligibility e.g. dysarthria, cleft palate, apraxia or phonological disorder  Gone from class for longer time, e.g. 25- minute session a few times per week  Students may receive: * Training for placement * Drill practice * Home practice packets * Therapy activities that also may support spelling and reading skills
