1 Key Stage 4 LIFE PSHE-Programme of study An Overview

2 At key stage 4, pupils will extend and practise the skills, further explore values and attitudes and stretch the knowledge and understanding that they have acquired during Key Stage 3. The LIFE programme aims to acknowledge that pupils are moving towards adulthood and seeks to develop independence and greater responsibility for themselves and others. At Key Stage 4 there is an increased likelihood that students may be faced with issues taught in PSHE and will need the skills and attitude that PSHE aims to install in them. The following pages represent an overview of the programme of study for PSHE. It is important to realise that there are a large number of lessons that fall within more than one of the core themes. Also each lesson title may represent more than one class period.

3 Year 10 Core Theme 1 : Health and Wellbeing

4 Year 10 Core Theme 1 : Health and Wellbeing Pupils will be taught: how to manage transition how to maintain health and wellbeing including aspects of physical, emotional, mental and sexual health about parenthood and the consequences of teenage pregnancy how to assess risks and take appropriate action to stay safe and help keep others safe how to identify and where to access help, advice and support from how to make wise and informed choices about health and wellbeing matters including drugs and the importance of a healthy diet and physical exercise how to respond in an emergency how the media affects our choices and our lifestyle

5 CORE THEME 1 : HEALTH AND WELLBEING Year 10 LessonBrief Overview Preparing for changeA new year, a new start, this lesson looks at how to manage transition and getting back into the swing of things. Year 10 CarouselThis series involves working with a variety of teachers looking at topics such as image, stress, emotional intelligence, addictions and living in a multicultural society. Sex and relationshipsUndertaking advice from Dudley NHS, this series includes a range of issues from sexual health to dealing with abusive relationships. Blood and organ donation and cancer awareness Two lessons that help young people become aware of health issues that sadly affect too many of us at some point.

7 Year 10 Core Theme 2 : Relationships Pupils will be taught: how to develop and maintain a variety of healthy relationship within a range of social/cultural contexts and to develop parenting skills how to recognise a range of emotions within relationships and manage them About the concept of consent in a variety of situations including sexual relationships About coping with loss including bereavement how to deal with risk or negative relationships including all forms of bullying, abuse, violence and online encounters to respect equality and be a productive member of the wider community how to identify and access appropriate advice and support

8 CORE THEME 2 : RELATIONSHIPS Year 10 LessonBrief Overview Working with othersA chance to explore how we can work with others effectively, taking thoughts of others into account and seeing things from different angles and conflict resolution. Anti Bullying WeekBullying is an issue that can affect anybody of any age. These lessons help us cope with and avoid finding ourselves victims of bullying. Leadership, communities, poverty, voluntary work and charities An in-depth mini series that develops the leadership potential in our pupils as they focus on successful communities, tackling world poverty and how they can make a difference. Show Racism the Red CardA series of DVD based lesson plans looking at Homophobia, Islamophobia and travelling communities. Fantasy Versus reality part 2A series of lessons promoting young peoples skills in reviewing the impact and influence of the media and indecent images to help keep pupils safe in an increasingly sexualised society.

10 Year 10 Core Theme 3 : Living in the wider world Pupils will be taught: about rights and responsibilities as member of diverse communities and active citizens how to make informed, ambitious decisions how to develop employability, team work and leadership skills, flexibility and resilience about the economic and business world how personal financial choices can affect themselves and others about rights and responsibilities as consumers

11 CORE THEME 3: LIVING IN THE WIDER WORLD Year 10 Lesson Main Aim: Pupils will be taught: Enterprise - Recruitment Looking at recruitment through the eyes of the employer will help pupils to understand the processes involved in successful employment. Rights and responsibilities Another chance to look further at rights and responsibilities, focussing on expectations, poor behaviour and positive behaviour. Work related learningAnother chance to review and set aspirations as we look into action planning, work experience and CVs. Leadership, communities, poverty, voluntary work and charities. An in-depth mini series that develops the leadership potential in our pupils as they focus on successful communities, tackling world poverty and how they can make a difference. LeadershipPupils find out about different styles of leadership and develop skills that are transferable into the work place.

12 LessonMain Aim: Pupils will be taught: Cultural DiversityA lesson that explores the richness of the society in which we live. The Changing role of women in society. A chance to explore how the role of women is gradually changing but have we yet achieved true equality. EqualityThis lesson explores whether true equality can be achieved and the role that the law and education play in this. Financial CapabilityFinancial education designed to help people avoid financial difficulty later on in life. This series includes earning, spending, borrowing and available financial products. College ApplicationsA chance to explore college courses and how to apply.

13 Year 10 In year 10 pupils will have the opportunity to learn: how to evaluate the extent to which self confidence and self esteem are affected by the views of other people to make use of healthy criticism and know the difference between helpful and unhelpful feedback the characteristics and possible causes of stress, anxiety and depression and strategies for managing them (including where to go for help) where to obtain health information, advice and support to take increased responsibly for their own health and hygiene about STIs and how to protect themselves and others from infection to recognise the effect that the media’s portrayal of an ideal body can have on their feelings and also about any health risks related to trying to achieve this image about personal safety in a variety of different settings the effects of substance misuse, both short term and long term, and how relationships and families can be affected

14 how to manage strong emotions and feelings the characteristics and benefits of positive, strong, supportive and equal relationships the implications of young parenthood and parenting skills to recognise both emotionally and physically abusive relationships about the impact of bereavement on families and where to find support from to recognise the impact that substance use and misuse can have on sexual activity to respect others’ rights delay sexual activity to understand issues about teenage pregnancy and where and how to access support to understand the role of sex in the media and how this impacts a person’s view on sexuality the role friends can play in supporting each other

Interpersonal Skills and self management A mini series helping pupils develop interpersonal skills and help with stress and time management as the run up to exams starts to gain momentum. Sex and relationships education What does the law have to say about sexual relationships? What are the present attitudes of young people towards sex? How can young people negotiate if they feel pressurised into doing something they don’t want to? Road SafetyAs the students are moving towards being able to drive, or indeed have friends that drive, these lessons help to ensure a sensible approach to observing the dangers of the road and reacting accordingly.

24 CORE THEME 3 : LIVING IN THE WIDER WORLD Year 11 LessonBrief Overview Employability and prospects A mini series that focuses on employability, CV’s, Personal Statements, Achievements, College Applications and interview techniques. Enterprise and personal finance Two lessons that help young people to get to grips with looking after their money and making the most of their income. Spiritual, Moral and Social concerns Three lessons focussing on community cohesion and a multi-faith UK. Citizenship- Rights and responsibilities An extended series that incorporates our highly successful citizenship curriculum in to LIFE. Students will look at human and animal rights and examine issues such as forced marriage and the denial of human rights around the world.

25 LessonBrief Overview Charities A lesson looking at the invaluable work done by charities and looking at how we can be involved or indeed inspired to take action. Politics and the media This series of lessons looks at the use of media in politics and also addressed contemporary issues such as social networking, religion in the media and also violence and the media. Law and society These lessons will look at the process of law making and also the issue of the death penalty looking at stories from the UK and around the world. Prejudice and discrimination are explored in detail and how we as citizens should respond to such issues. World Poverty and LEDCHere we explore the issues of poverty and what life is like in a less economically developed country.

29 Assessment Assessment will take place throughout lessons via informal judgements and books will be marked with stamps to show how each pupil is progressing throughout the year. Questionnaires will be conducted as and when appropriate in order to gauge how well each year group is grasping a concept. Peer assessment will also be used. This programme of study shows that we have clear expectations of what the pupils will know, understand and be able to do at the end of each key stage.
