Basic Introduction Hook – grab your reader’s attention Background information – introduce the topic, give a basic summary Thesis – tell what your essay will argue
Thesis Weak thesis Johnny goes from nice and shy to tuff by stabbing Bob. This shows you should be tough, not weak. Strong thesis Johnny goes from being caring but timid to a thoughtful leader by having to protect his friends. This change shows that when you stand up for people you love, you become a stronger person.
Hook Quotation – find an important or interesting quote from the book Anecdote – tell a personal story related to the story/theme Question – ask a question of the reader to get them to think about the topic. Interesting fact – find a statistic or fact related to the book, e.g. something about gang violence in the U.S., poverty, bullying, etc. Simile or metaphor – compare the topic to something to give insight, e.g.
Background Information Give the title and author of the book Briefly summarize the story (in regards to your topic)
