2 Why PK? Pros of Punctuation Karate: Caters to needs of visual; auditory and tactile learners. Children are active while learning; good for ADHD and other highly active children Practically ALL children are engaged; ‘no child is left behind’ You can teach almost any aspect of punctuation using this system – each action relates to its written form Once students have learned this, it shows in their writing This will then transfer very easily to their word processing skills It is a practically paperless method of learning! 3 1: Capital letter Draw a C in the air with your arm while saying “capital letter” Ruth Hoevertsz 2011 WALT use punctuation karate 3

4 2: Period Punch your right fist into your left open hand while saying “peri-” and then punch out into the air in front of you to say “-od” 1: “peri” 2 “od” Ruth Hoevertsz 2011 WALT use punctuation karate 4.

5 3: Quotation marks / 66 and 99 Bend your index and ring fingers of both hands back and forth while saying “quotation marks” or “66 and 99” for younger grades Ruth Hoevertsz 2011 WALT use punctuation karate 5

9 Try it: Punctuate the red components in the text below using punctuation karate: capitals, exclamation marks, periods and indents. There was such a noise in the back garden!
