2. Living Free What are some things we are free to do as citizens of the United States? What kinds of things are we not free to do? Consider … if there are limits, are we really free?

3. Living Free Americans sometimes struggle with the exact meaning of freedom. Today we look at the concept of freedom in Christ and what it means to us as believers.

4. Living Free 1.Cautious Living 1 Cor. 8:9-13 Listen for how a Christian’s liberty could harm other believers.

5. Living Free 1 Cor. 8:9-13 (NIV) Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak. [10] For if anyone with a weak conscience sees you who have this knowledge eating in an idol's temple, won't he be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols? [11] So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. [12] When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. [13] Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall.

7. Living Free Consider the following moral struggles for believers in our society today: sexual immorality dealing with anger substance abuse addiction to certain forms of entertainment (music, movies, TV, computer games) in bondage to materialism worry (lack of faith)

9. Living Free How might exercising my rights as a believer cause a weaker brother to sin in these areas? Entertainment Movies we go to Music choices StruggleProblem caused for weaker brother Materialism How we spend our money on “stuff” Unnecessary debt Poor steward of what God has provided Failure to tithe Worry Constant complaining Often in a dither about family, spouse, job, bills, etc

10. Living Free How must “strong” believers exercise their freedom appropriately so that “weak” believers are not tempted to sin?  Be aware that your actions are seen by believers and unbelievers alike and will influence them.

11. Living Free 2. Purposeful Living 1 Cor. 9:19-23 Some of you have taught in a preschool class … how do you interact with preschoolers that is different from how you interact with adults?

Living Free Listen for how Paul changed the way he interacted with different groups of people. 1 Cor. 9:19-23 (NIV) Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. [20] To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. [21] To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law. [22] To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. [23] I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

We would have dessert, tell jokes, and play games together. One day I suggested to my wife that we invite a couple who had visited the church to join us on Friday night. We did, and we had a good time in the process. During the entire evening, we never said anything about church or Sunday school or the Bible or anything remotely religious. But, do you know what? They joined the church in a few weeks. Now, he is teaching a class himself. And they would both tell you that they were not living the disciple's life before they played cards and ate dessert with us that night.

[26] Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. [27] No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

20. Living Free What kind of training do people do when preparing for a running marathon? What privileges do they forego? Why does a training regimen make it easier to run a marathon?

Living Free Kinds of training we can do: regular Bible study training in FAITH presentation weekly Small Group Bible Study attendance be involved in ministry to others exercise our spiritual gift’s prayer fasting (food, TV, activity) submission to God’s Holy Spirit Pray for God to reveal to you what you need to avoid and do as you run the race of a Christian life.

22. Living Free Application for us as believers: Think of at least five people to whom God wants you to deliver personal love grocery clerk coworker neighbor doctor/nurse man/woman on street corner

23. Living Free Application for us as believers: Realize that you might you need to give up some things to deliver a message of personal love: time effort might have to leave your personal comfort zone inconvenience

Living Free Application for us as believers: Consider the red/white/blue of our flag that stand for our freedoms … Realize also that there are areas of black or white in our lives where we know exactly what is right to do in exercising our freedoms There are also grey areas where it is not so clear how to exercise our freedoms appropriately Ask for God’s guidance in those grey areas – areas where Christians have strong opinions one way or the other on what activities are OK for Christians to engage in Consider how your actions impact others
