Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) Using Observation and Documentation to Assess Children’s Developmental Progress Developed by Amy Guinto, Peter Mangione, and Kerry Welsh,. © 2004. WestEd, The Program for Infant/Toddler Caregivers. This document may be reproduced for educational purposes.

Session Overview 1.Brief Overview of the DRDP 2.Naturalistic Observation & Documentation Methods 3.Definition of Mastery & Emerging 4.Developmental Levels 5.Practice Rating Written Scenario 6.Practice Rating Video Clips 7.Multiple Themes Video Clip

The Desired Results Developmental Profile for Infants and Toddlers : California Department of Education: Child Development Division A naturalistic observational assessment tool An assessment tool that applies to children from birth up to 36 months of age An assessment tool that tracks children’s development & learning across developmental sequences

Naturalistic Observation : Focuses on child’s typical behavior in different situations or settings over a period of time Reflects typical interactions that the infant care teacher has with the child Does not interfere with the child’s interests and routines

Observation Strategies Become familiar with developmentally based descriptions of behavior Observe the child during her or his natural daily routine, in different situations, and at different times during the day Observe the child over time, not just one day

Observation Strategies (continued) Focus on exactly what the child does, without evaluating the behavior Record observations as soon as possible—but avoid letting the recording or documentation method interfere with being responsive to children

Documentation Methods Anecdotal Records: Post-It Notes Mailing Labels Recipe Cards Notebooks

Documentation Methods Portfolios Audio Tapes Photographs Videos Checklists

Activity #1: What’s wrong with this Picture? 1.Read the Scenario 1: Maria and Juan 2.Note what’s wrong with the picture

What’s wrong with this picture?

Structure of Desired Results and Rating The Infant/Toddler DRDP consists of nine developmental themes The caregiver uses developmentally based descriptions to assess behavior The caregiver determines which behavior is the child’s level of MASTERY The caregiver considers if the child is showing signs that he/she is EMERGING to the next developmental level

What is MASTERY? The typical way a child behaves or responds Behaviors that are done easily and confidently The way a child most often behaves or responds in different situations at different times

What is EMERGING? When EMERGING to the next level, the child engages in the higher level behavior tentatively, with a lot of effort, and sometimes awkwardly. Behaviors or responses that are considered EMERGING appear inconsistently, but suggest that the child will soon master the next level.

Activity #2: Rating Written Scenario 1.Read Scenario 2: Sam and Sally 2.Write down what behaviors you ‘observed’ in this scenario 3.Review the Developmental Levels of the Memory Theme 4.Decide Level of ‘MASTERY’ 5.Consider ‘EMERGING’

Step 2: What did Sam do? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Step 3: Review the Developmental Levels of the Memory Theme

Step 4: What is Sam’s Developmental Level of MASTERY on the Memory Theme? Why?

Step 5: Is Sam EMERGING to the next Developmental Level?

Activity #3: Rating Video Clips Before watching video clip: Review Levels of Development for Theme 1 ST Time: Watch the video. Take notes if you’d like. 2 nd Time: Decide the child’s highest developmental level of MASTERY. Think about what you observed that led you to select this level. Afterwards, consider the option of EMERGING

Review the Developmental Levels of the Fine Motor Theme for Video Clip 1

Fine Motor Theme Video Clip 1

What Developmental Level did Eli MASTER on the Fine Motor Theme?

Is Eli EMERGING to the next Developmental Level?

Review the Developmental Levels of the Math – Space and Size Theme for Video Clip 2

Math – Space and Size Theme Video Clip 2

What Developmental Level did the Child MASTER on the Math - Space and Size Theme?

Is the Child EMERGING to the next Developmental Level?

Activity 4: Multiple Themes Video Clip 1.Review List of Developmental Themes 2.Watch Video Clip 3 3.Discuss which Developmental Themes were demonstrated by Carter in the video clip

List of Developmental Themes 1.Self Awareness and Positive Self Concept 2.Social and Interpersonal Skills 3.Self Regulation 4.Communication and Language 5.Cognitive and Problem Solving Skills 6.Mathematical Knowledge 7.Emergent Literacy Skills 8.Motor Skills 9.Awareness of Safe and Healthy Behavior

Multiple Themes Video Clip 3

Which of these themes did Carter demonstrate? 1.Self Awareness and Positive Self Concept 2.Social and Interpersonal Skills 3.Self Regulation 4.Communication and Language 5.Cognitive and Problem Solving Skills 6.Mathematical Knowledge 7.Emergent Literacy Skills 8.Motor Skills 9.Awareness of Safe and Healthy Behavior

Review of Session 1.Summarized the DRDP 2.Discussed Naturalistic Observation & Documentation Methods 3.Defined Mastery & Emerging 4.Became familiar with Developmental Levels for different Themes 5.Rated Written Scenario 6.Rated Video Clips 7.Identified Multiple Developmental Themes in One Video Clip
