1 The Devil and Tom Walker by Washington Irving  What does it mean to “sell your soul”?  Are there things (wealth, success, fame, etc.) that you are willing to pay any price for?  Do you think it is ever worth the consequences you may suffer?

3 Working with a partner, brainstorm a list of people—real or fictional— who fit this profile.  Pick one person and list his/her gains and their consequences.  Assign a value to each item and decide whether, overall, the prize was worth the price.  Be prepared to share.

6 Who was “Kidd the Pirate”?  Pirate born in Scotland in 1645  Pursued French and eventually pirate ships who interfered with British and American trade  In time, however, he became a pirate himself  In 1699, he returned to New York, hoping to be pardoned  En route, he buried or gave away large amounts of treasure.  Was arrested and returned to Boston where he was hanged for murder and piracy in 1701.  Rumors concerning the buried treasure of Captain Kidd have persisted for over 300 years!
