3 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION
15/04/2017 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION What are eco-labels? Eco-labels are common means used for promotion The intention of eco-labels is to assist consumers to choose products that have less impact on the environment Eco-labeling is not a regulatory requirement for detergent products or ingredients Eco-label criteria are not harmonized NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION NOVOZYMES A/S

4 How are eco-labels awarded?
15/04/2017 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION CONCEPT: FADING SPRAY ANIMATION EXPERIENCE: RUNS AUTOMATIC FROM BEGINING OF SLIDE ANIMATION TIME: 3 SEC. POSSIBLE TO CHANGE COLOURS OF THE SPRAY How are eco-labels awarded? An eco-label is awarded by an impartial third-party in relation to certain products or services that are independently determined to meet environmental leadership criteria Eco-label provisions are based on scientific assessment of aspects like pollution and resource demand, e.g. toxicity, biodegradability, and energy consumption Eco-labels may include Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION NOVOZYMES A/S

5 Why should you get labeled?
15/04/2017 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION CONCEPT: FADING SPRAY ANIMATION EXPERIENCE: RUNS AUTOMATIC FROM BEGINING OF SLIDE ANIMATION TIME: 3 SEC. POSSIBLE TO CHANGE COLOURS OF THE SPRAY Why should you get labeled? Consumers are getting sustainability savvy and demand proof that the products they buy are environmentally safe Third-party labeling helps with brand differentiation Eco-labeling ensures compliance with existing and new legislation regarding eco-friendly and sustainable detergent products NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION NOVOZYMES A/S

6 Enzymes and eco-labeling
15/04/2017 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Enzymes and eco-labeling Enzymes meet the criteria for eco-labeling for consumer products for detergents because: Enzymes are established in several industries as safe and environmentally attractive alternatives to chemical processing Enzymes have a beneficial impact on the environment as they can replace harsh chemicals and save energy by enabling lower wash temperatures Enzymes are totally biodegradable and do not harm waste water treatment plants or the aquatic environment at large NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION NOVOZYMES A/S

8 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION
15/04/2017 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION The EU Flower Enzyme criteria for different product groups: The enzyme production micro-organism shall be absent from the final enzyme preparation; NZ enzymes live up to this requirement Type of enzyme must be labeled on the final product (e.g. protease, lipase et cetera) NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION NOVOZYMES A/S

9 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION
15/04/2017 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION The Nordic Swan The Nordic Swan is more common in Scandinavia than the EU flower The criteria for the Nordic Swan are stricter than for the EU flower (e.g. on bleaching with chloride) Nordic Swan labeling does not require tests for enzymes Enzymes are exempted from requirements for sensitizers and from R42 and R43 ingredient limits for allergenic effects as long as they are present in liquid form or non dusting granulates Allergenic effects (R42 and R43): The present criteria do not include requirements regarding the content of allergenic substances except for regulations on content of isothazolinons, which are known allergens, and used as preservatives. For the combined content of isotiazolinons, a limit of 500 ppm (0.05 %) has been established as the content of kathon (a mixture of 5-chlor-2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-on and 2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-on in the ration 3:1) may not at the same time exceed 15 ppm. Instead of isothiazolinons it is possible to use sodium benzoate or parabens as preservative. As an example, methylparaben – E218 – is used in natural paint. It is suggested that the criteria be supplemented by a general demand that the product may not contain more than 1 % of substances classified with R43. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION NOVOZYMES A/S

10 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION
15/04/2017 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION The Nordic Swan Enzymes used in laundry detergents and stain removers include protease, lipase and amylase. Enzymes are readily degradable in aquatic environments and are not toxic to aquatic organisms. They are accordingly not regarded as a problem in aquatic environments. Allergenic effects (R42 and R43): The present criteria do not include requirements regarding the content of allergenic substances except for regulations on content of isothazolinons, which are known allergens, and used as preservatives. Minimum impact on aquatic life (OECD-test 201&202, full product), against animal testing Use of claims (JBAK): The words ’quick and complete’ are not anchored in any regulation. The right word to use if living up to OECD tests is ’rapidly’ (fast biodegradable) NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION NOVOZYMES A/S

20 Enzymes and eco-labeling
15/04/2017 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Enzymes and eco-labeling Concerning human safety, peer-reviewed studies show that the use of enzymes in laundry and cleaning products represents no concerns for consumers For modern detergent enzymes in consumer products, very low levels are involved The enzymes are non-dusting in solid preparations, non-volatile in liquid preparations, non-toxic if ingested, and there are no adverse effects from handling Enzymatic detergents do not appear to increase the potential for skin or respiratory sensitization for consumers, including atopic individuals and people with sensitive skin NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION NOVOZYMES A/S

21 Novozymes helps you get labeled
15/04/2017 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION Novozymes helps you get labeled When it comes to ingredients, Novozymes assist customers with information on enzyme ingredients, e.g. how to use the DID list (detergent ingredient database) Novozymes are also working on the criteria for DfE – Design for the Environment by US EPA; criteria for enzymes are not yet defined, but we expect that the criteria will be based on scientific data NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION NOVOZYMES A/S

22 The Detergent Ingredient Database (DID)
15/04/2017 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION The Detergent Ingredient Database (DID) The criteria for both the European Eco-label and the Nordic Swan are based on data reflecting toxicity and biodegradability listed in Detergent Ingredient Database (DID) The first DID list was developed in with criteria for detergents. When the DID was revised in 2004, it became a “living” document, to be updated regularly The DID list consists of an ingredient database, including test results and references to tests and laboratories. Factors such as toxicity and biodegradability are used for evaluation of environmental impact of detergent ingredients Enzymes are listed among many other ingredients NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION NOVOZYMES A/S

23 The Critical Dilution Volume (CDV)
15/04/2017 NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION The Critical Dilution Volume (CDV) CDV is a key ecological parameter for both the EU Flower and the Nordic Swan It integrates the weight, biodegradability and toxicity of all ingredients in the final detergent product CDV calculation methods and parameters are used as evaluation criteria, but they vary for different product groups Enzymes only constitute a small part of the final product Ingredients in NZ products pose no harm to human and the environment; however it is a case by case judgment if ingredients should be considered when evaluating criteria. It is therefore very important that RA is contacted for specific customer questions. NOVOZYMES PRESENTATION NOVOZYMES A/S
