Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage Series Pt 3 Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage Series Pt 3 Divorce and Remarriage Family Worship Center Rev. Mark Schwarzbauer, Ph.D.

I Corinthians 7:10-16 10 Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband.

I Corinthians 7:10-16 11 But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.

I Corinthians 7:10-16 12 But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her.

I Corinthians 7:10-16 13 And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him.

I Corinthians 7:10-16 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.

I Corinthians 7:10-16 15 But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace.

I Corinthians 7:10-16 16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?

Part One: Divorce of Married Believers

I Corinthians 7:10-16 10 Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband.

I Corinthians 7:10-16 11 But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.

If believers’ divorce they are to remain unmarried to allow for reconciliation.

Divorced are NOT “still married in God’s sight.”

Part Two: Divorce of the Believer and Unbeliever

“I not the Lord say.” Vs 12 “I not the Lord” means additional not uninspired.

“To the rest.” The Matthew 19 passage contextually deals with value of marriage and women in the controversy of Hillel vs. Shammai. “To the rest” refers to another group of people for whom the Matthew 19 does not totally apply as they face a different problem. 22 Paul addresses believers married to unbelievers here.

Ezra had to deal with this (Ezra 10).

“Willing to live with.” From the Greek word suneudokevw (suneudokeo) Dwell together in a good way. Further means to agree with, approve of, consent to, sympathize with. The unbeliever agrees to live like a believer. From the Greek word suneudokevw (suneudokeo) Dwell together in a good way. Further means to agree with, approve of, consent to, sympathize with. 25 I Corinthians 7:10-16 16 For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?

“Let him depart” is a permissive command. When the unbeliever wants out divorce is commanded! The believer is released from bondage of marriage to an unbeliever ( dedouvlwtai - literally slavery).
