Pop Artist Jim Dine

What is Pop Art? “Pop” Art refers to “Popular” Art Artists from this style chose to show everyday, or popular, objects. Think about the bathrobes in the previous slide. Bathrobes are common objects in homes.

Important Pop Artists Andy Warhol Roy Lichtenstein What Popular Objects are these artists referencing?

Featured Pop Artist Jim Dine

Exploring the same popular theme… in different ways. What is the same about each robe? What has the artist changed?

Jim Dine quotes “I appropriate things and make them mine. I’m a different person when I come back to them 20 years later, but they’re still mine.” (In this case, appropriate means to borrow or use. For example, Ms. Sirna appropriated some of of Mrs. Ragan’s sewing supplies.) “For me, drawing is everything.. because it informs everything. It even informs my poetry. It’s the way I begin everything.” What objects does Dine appropriate in his work? How does Jim Dine plan his artwork?

Jim Dine’s Hearts Why do you think that Jim Dine chose to show the hearts in so many different ways?

Jim Dine’s Life Jim Dine had a special relationship with his grandparents. They owned a hardware store. This is why Jim Dine chose to show tools in some art works. He also liked to show hearts because he felt that everyone could relate to caring about something. He said that the most important thing was not that the objects he painted were “popular” images, but that they were personally relevant to him.

More of his work… One of the images shows a 3D sculpture, one shows a 2D drawing. Which is which?

Large Scale Sculpture What storybook character is this?

Jim Dine Is a “Pop Artist” “Pop” means “popular” Likes to show the same image several times. Feels that creating personally relevant artwork is important. Is alive and still an artist today. Draw something that you use or see every day that is important to you. Draw it 3 different ways.
