2 Le Comparatif We use the comparative to compare: 1) Two things or two people: Ex:La Chine est grande. China is big. Le Canada est plus grand que la Chine. Canada is bigger than China.

3 Le Comparatif 2) Two actions Ex.M. Simon mange vite. M. Simon eats quickly. Mme Mercier mange plus vite que M. Simon. Mme Mercier eats quicker than M. Simon.

4 Le Comparatif To form the comparative of adjectives (describing words) and adverbs (words that modify verbs), we use the following construction: Plus + un adjectif/adverbe + que + un nom

5 Le Comparatif Exemples: Ex:Marc court vite. Luc court plus vite que Marc. Ex.Annie est belle. Lucia est plus belle quAnnie.

6 Le Superlatif We use the superlative to compare: 1) more than two objects or people: Ex. La Chine est grande. China is large. Le Canada est plus grand que la Chine. Canada is larger than China. La Russie est la plus grande. Russia is the largest.

7 Le Superlatif 2) More than two actions: Ex.M. Simon mange vite. M. Simon eats quickly. Mme Mercier mange plus vite que M. Simon. Mme Mercier eats quicker than M. Simon. M. Poirier mange le plus vite. M. Poirier eats the quickest.

8 Le Superlatif The superlative indicates the highest quality – the best To form the superlative of adjectives and adverbs: le/la/les + plus/moins +un adjectif le+ plus/moins+un adverbe (invariable – doesnt change)

9 Le Superlatif Adjectifs et Adverbes Irréguliers The adjective bon and the adverb bien have irregular forms in both the comparative and the superlative *pg 23-24 texte*

The adjective bon agrees both in gender AND in number in the comparative and superlative!!

11 Ladverbe bien et – Observez! LadverbeAu comparatifAu superlatif bienmieux que (better than) le mieux (the best) **bien et mal sont invariables (ils ne changent pas)!!

12 Exemples! Air France est mieux quAir Canada. Lavion marche mieux que la voiture. Lequipe du Canada joue le mieux de tous. **Never EVER say: plus bon que / plus bien que, le plus bien!!!
