Harmonisation of stratospheric NO 2 /O 3 column data products NORS/NDACC UV-VIS meeting, Brussels, 3-4 July 2012 1 F. Hendrick and M. Van Roozendael Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (IASB-BIRA), Brussels, Belgium + NDACC UV-VIS Working Group
2
Context NDACC UV-vis Working Group meeting at British Antarctic Survey in November 2007: « There is a need to harmonize stratospheric O 3 and NO 2 column retrievals » Main reasons: Lack of consistency between the stations due to the use of different DOAS settings (e.g., NO 2 XS at different temperature) and AMFs Satellite groups encountered problems in the validation of their data using the NDACC UV-vis database, e.g. Wetzel et al., ACP, 2007 for the validation of MIPAS NO 2 NORS/NDACC UV-VIS meeting, Brussels, 3-4 July 2012 2

NO 2 questionnaire (2) NORS/NDACC UV-VIS meeting, Brussels, 3-4 July 2012 10 QuestionRecommendation Correction for the variation of the stratospheric t° (around 220K) ? Temperature correction using a simple monthly zonal climatology of temperature profiles. Could be coupled to the AMF climatology. Filtering of the data conta- minated by tropospheric NO 2 Langley-plot method (data points not lying on 'smooth‘ lines indicate a tropospheric contamination) Explicit correction for the impact of the Ring effect on the NO 2 SCDs ? post-processing option, based on simple SZA parameterization Should we take into account the NO 2 photochemistry and its impact on the AMF ? Sensitivity tests needed. Explicit correction is rather complex to implement. Could be included in the error budget Best estimates of the random and systematic uncertainties ? Random uncertainty derived from fitting residuals. Systematic uncertainty to be estimated off-line based on sensitivity studies. Should be performed for each station. Note that both errors must be provided separately according to GEOMS. AMF correction for the period affected by the Pinatubo aerosols ? Sensitivity tests needed. Not easy to include in standard recommendations.
