A Mentoring Program Designed to Engage the C+ Managers within Lucent to aid in the development and promotion of African-American associates within Alcatel-Lucent. How Does it work? The Leaders of African-Descent National Board oversee the program. The Leaders of African-Descent Regions help identify protégé’s, and help provide local training and development opportunities for protégés. The Leaders of African-Descent National Board will work with the Regions in identifying and linking mentors with protégés. The National Board help to solicit C+ Managers to volunteer to be mentors.

Mentor at least one to two African-American employees over the next 12 months. Aim to Promote or “Strategically Lateral” at least one African-American Employee over the next 12 Months. Support Leaders of African-Descent and its National and Regional programs. Enhance and Support overall communication of the skills and qualifications of African- American employees with other hiring managers.

The Mentor should be at least 1 level higher than the protégé. The Mentor can designate the protégé they wish to mentor and vice versa. The Program is to continue for the duration of a year. At a Minimum, there should be at least 3 Meetings during the year. Mentor is to complete the expectation document with the protégé and supply a copy to the PO1 coordinator. Mentor is to complete a program evaluation with the protégé at the end of the program year.

Participate on PO1 conference calls. Help solicit mentors from the AA & non-AA C+ managers within the regional community, and solicit and engage members as protégés. When applicable, help sponsor quarterly protégé training and development workshops. Protégé Training programs to provide formal training to members on key areas/topics: Resume Improvement, Interviewing Techniques, Networking, etc. When applicable, help kickoff and deploy Power of One Overview Workshop material to regional community.

Monitor the progress of the mentoring relationships to report to National Board committee. When a protégé in region is assigned to a mentor, request regional team to periodically (3 months) obtain feedback from both the mentor and protégé. Feedback should include: # of meetings completed or planned, issues or concerns of either party, development, promotions, and mentoring activities underway or planned. Track the number of overall promotions, and/or strategic lateral and report to the National team. In the event the relationship is not working, the regional team should take steps to change the relationship or try to resolve the issues.
