God’s Great Missionaries Our Goal {5} It would be a mistake this quarter to study these biblical agents as interesting historical figures and leave it at that. Rather, we need to catch the inspiration of their lives and focus on our mission to this dying world.

Matthew 10: Jesus and His Disciples Key Text M ATTHEW 10:31 NIV “ ‘ So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.’ ” “Don’t worry!” LB “Never be afraid.” Phillips “Fear not” RSV “Have no fear” NEB “No need to be afraid” JB

Matthew 10: Jesus and His Disciples Initial Words {59} The disciples had been with Jesus for only a year or so. But they had walked and talked with the One who was, Himself, the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). The time had finally come to put into practice what they had learned. Before Jesus sent out the disciples, He gave them special instruction.

Matthew 10: Jesus and His Disciples Quick Look 1. Instruction: Their Mark (Matthew 10:5, 6) 2. Instruction: Their Message (Matthew 10:7) 3. Instruction: Their Method (Matthew 10:8-20)

Matthew 10: Jesus and His Disciples 1. Instruction: Their Mark M ATTHEW 10:5, 6 NKJV “ ‘ Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.’ ”

1. Instruction: Their Mark Gentile and Jews {64} Why should the good news go only to the Jewish people? The answer, it seems, stem from cultural sensitivities. Jesus did not want the disciples to jeopardize their mission. “If they had first preached the gospel to these, they would have lost their influence among the Jews who were first to hear the message of God.” EGW The Advent Review and the Sabbath Herald Apr 19 1892

1. Instruction: Their Mark Gentile and Jews {64} EGW also suggests that it would have involved them in controversy with the Pharisees, and this would have discouraged the disciples in their work. As followers of Christ, we need to be very sensitive to the culture that we are working in. The last thing we need is to portray a sense of arrogance and superiority.

Matthew 10: Jesus and His Disciples 2. Instruction: Their Message M ATTHEW 10:7 NKJV “ ‘ And as you go, preach saying, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” ’ ”

2. Instruction: Their Message The Kingdom of Heaven is Near {60} The people were expecting a political king who would establish a political rule over specific geographical territory and free them from the Romans. But God’s kingdom includes not only geographical territory but spiritual, as well. Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21).

2. Instruction: Their Message The Kingdom of Heaven is Near {60} The kingdom that Jesus preached about was far different. The kingdom of heaven was now. Now people could see Jesus, hear His words, and learn the principles on which salvation and heaven are based. Now they could see how the principles of God’s government operate in real life.

2. Instruction: Their Message The Kingdom of Heaven is Near {63} He had in mind an “upside down kingdom,” where the poor are more blessed than the rich; where the meek are more honored than the powerful; where the persecuted are to be admired more than the persecutors (Matt 5:3-12).

Matthew 10: Jesus and His Disciples 3. Instruction: Their Method M ATTHEW 10:8-20 NKJV “ ‘ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. … Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your moneybelts. … Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. … Do not worry about how or what you should speak.’ ”

3. Instruction: Their Method A Holistic Ministry {66} Jesus instructs His disciples to have a balanced ministry. Certainly, they were to prepare people for the kingdom of heaven. But they were also to remember that the kingdom was already with them. And that meant they were to have concern for people’s total needs—including physical and social.

3. Instruction: Their Method Don’t Be Afraid of Them {68} Much of Jesus’ address to His disciples is devoted to advice on how to deal with problems they will encounter. Jesus tells His disciples that they should not fear the difficult circumstances they will encounter. They will be brought before governors and kings to be His witnesses.

3. Instruction: Their Method Don’t Be Afraid of Them {65, 67} While we can’t possibly be prepared for every situation we may face each and every day, we are confident that we won’t have to speak or act alone. We can gain comfort from Jesus’ promise: “ ‘It will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you’.” Matt 10:20 NIV

Matthew 10: Jesus and His Disciples Final Words {61} The original disciples received witnessing instructions based on timeless principles. They work just as well today when properly understood and applied.
