2   Hunter/gatherers  Survive by hunting  Most existed in the part, but some survive today  Depended on their immediate environment  Nomadic  Labor usually divided equally  Did not have a surplus of food  Also known as tribal  Sacrificed their individually for the sake of the larger tribe. What are the different types of Societies?

3   Pasture animals for food and transportation  Still exist today, mostly in the desert  Domestication of animals  Able to produce a surplus of food  Became less nomadic  Some were allowed to participate in non survival activities; traders, healers, spiritual leaders, craftspeople Pastoral Societies

4   Relied on cultivating fruits, vegetables, and plants.  Came about the same time as pastoralists  Had to be mobile (depletion of land)  Produced a surplus that they could store  Other professions emerged Horticultural

5   Technological advances to cultivate groups ( grains, wheat, corn, rice, barley)  Agricultural Revolution  Increase in food supply led to larger population  Towns becoming a center of trade and commerce  Various occupations; rulers, educators, craftspeople, merchants, religious leaders  Women’s roles of equality started to change  Feudalism and nobility Agricultural

6   Based on using machines to produce goods  During the 18 th century – Industrial Revolution  Productivity increased, means of transportation improved  Great wealth to the few, masses worked in the factories  Public education  Life expectancy improved  Political institutions changed  Large cities emerged  Struggle between the workers and the industrialists  Bureaucratic forms of organizations Industrial Society

7   Technological revolution – computers  Based on information, knowledge, and the selling of services  Society is being shaped by the human mind  Increased level of education and training, consumerism, availability of goods, and social mobility Postindustrial

8  Society Group Projects Directions: In groups of no more than 3, you are going to create a society on the particular group given (Hunters/gatherers, Horticultural, Agricultural, Industrial, and Post Industrial Societies). After deciding on all of the information, create a poster (white paper given) that represents the society you formed. Include the name of society, flag, any symbols, etc. that represents your society. Include color You need to describe each of the following information on the back: -The Name of the Society -Type of Group given (hunter, agricultural, etc.) -Type of society- Is it modern or simple? Explain your answer. -Division of Labor - How the labor is divided? (male, female, young, old) -Interesting Cultural Facts (3)- example: Arranged marriages at age of 7 -Religions- ex: Polytheistic, monotheistic, pagan, atheist, Catholic, Jewish,…- include any other supporting details. --Flag- Design a flag for your society
