The examples given emphasized the importance of leadership focused on personal excellence and the ability to create a team attitude that generates a group drive towards bettering the team--going beyond self improvement and building the best team you can create. Thank you, Sam, for another interesting and informative talk. Sam Kouvaris Director of Sports Information for WJXT, Channel 4 Karl and his wife Melva have gone to the Midwest for an Air Force promotion ceremony for their son-in-law and the high school graduation for their grandson. Lal has agreed to take over the reins for May. We are glad to have had the West side Club and Downtown Club join us for an Interclub. Also, Butch Shadwell hosted guest, Bill Flood. Tues 4/29, Chuck Watson and Lal Ramdeen read at the Navy Child Development Center. KIWANIS EDUCATION The first Kiwanis club was organized in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A., in 1914. The group received a charter from the state of Michigan on January 21, 1915 – the day that is regarded as the birth date of Kiwanis. The founding club’s name is Detroit Kiwanis Club No. 1 in recognition of its heritage. The name “Kiwanis” was coined from an expression of the American Indians in the Detroit area, which was found in Bishop Baraga’s dictionary of the Otchipew language. The expression “Nunc Kee-wan- nis” meant, broadly, “we trade”, or “we share our talents.” As a coined word, however, “Kiwanis” has no meaning except as the name of a leading international service club.
