DAWET Project Background A volunteering project by PBK Collaboration with Deepam Trust, Tamil Nadu, India A project designed for Dalit Women Group of Tanjavur India

Indian Caste System In India, the people have been systematically discriminated on the basis of their work and descent for centuries. Dalits

Who Are Dalits Members of the lowest rank of Indian society Discriminated at almost every level Poor Street Sweepers, drainage cleaner and agriculture workers

Economic Status of Dalits 80% of Dalits are still under poverty line The jobs done by Dalits rarely provide enough income to feed their families or to send their children to school

Deepam Trust This organisation was formed in 1995 with help of govt and international NGOs Focus on the development of poor women, children and Dalits by providing skills training and micro-loan to start small businesses

The overall goal for the DAWET project is to improve quality of life for the poor and marginalized Dalit women by providing skills training and opportunity to start a small scale business. Two main activities: – Cake Baking Training (15 women) – Nursery Raising (15 women)

Expected Outcome Trained Dalit women will be able to generate income for themselves and their family by starting up small-scale baking business and crop selling More Dalit women will be trained once the initial batch of trainers teach other women

Milestone Phase 1 – Module Preparation & Sponsorship Request (January 2014) – Recipes for cakes – SOP for baking – SOP for crop plantation – Presentation to potential sponsors Phase 2 –Training for Trainers – 7 volunteers will undergo training program on baking and crop plantation – Simulation Program for volunteers Phase 3 – Program Implementation – Training for Dalit Women 14 th – 24 th February 2014 at Tanjavur, India Phase 4 – Continuous Learning – Collaborate with Deepam Trust for further training
