4 Present tense verbs These verbs show action that is happening now –The dogs are barking. –The girl is screaming at the boy. –Three monkeys jump. –Susie May skips towards Adam.

5 Present tense verbs IMPORTANT NOTE: Many present tense verbs end in “ing” or “s”

6 Past tense verbs These verbs show action that has already happened. –The dogs barked. –The girl screamed at the boy. –Three monkeys jumped. –Susie May skipped towards Adam.

7 Past tense verbs IMPORTANT NOTE: Add ed to most verbs to form the past tense

8 Past tense verbs IMPORTANT NOTE PART TWO: Verbs ending in “y”: Change the “y” to “i” and add “ed” (hurried, worried) Verbs ending in “p”: Make it “pp” and then add “ed” (skipped, flipped)

9 Irregular Past Tense Verbs These are not regular because you can’t put an “ed” to make it past tense You need to change the spelling to make it past tense

13 “Synonym” it Verbs have all kinds of synonyms. Using a more descriptive verb can really spice up your writing Example –The student ran by the teacher. –The student ______by the teacher darted zoomed zipped sprinted galloped dashed scurried raced

14 Game Time There will be 10 questions about verbs. With a partner, you will have a certain amount of time to answer each question. You and your partner must discuss the questions and come to an agreed upon answer. You must record your answer on the answer sheet. Answer sheets will be collected. Correct answers are worth $1 class cash. Students that get all 12 questions correct will gain 3 bonus points for their group.
