4 The Fender Stratocaster revolutionised modern music Click to listen The ‘Strat’ has probably influenced modern music more than any other guitar. Designed by Leo Fender in the 50’s, it has changed little. It is still widely used by players of all styles. Noted ‘Strat’ users include Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, the Vaughan brothers and Buddy Guy - to name but a few !

11 Banjo - quick finger picking Banjo The banjo is a descendant of the African long-necked lute, a musical instrument that slaves brought to the United States from Africa during the 17th century. The banjo, played by plucking, strumming, or finger- picking the strings, is common now in American folk and bluegrass music. 13 Bob Marley - Reggae man Bob Marley The Jamaican musician Bob Marley first became known as one of the leaders of reggae music in the late 1960s. His music contains social, political, and humanistic messages. This song, “Get Up, Stand Up”, urges social activism. 16 Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Singer Ella Fitzgerald The popular jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald began her career in 1934 as vocalist with Chick Webb’s swing band. After Webb’s death, Fitzgerald took over the band and later embarked on a solo career. She earned the title “First lady of Song” because her silken voice and smooth mellow tone were unparalleled. Fitzgerald’s position in popular music is unique in that she is able to move freely between jazz and pop styles. Her jazz interpretations are coloured with the tint of blues and complex intonation, while her performance of pop ballads are intimate and inviting. Click to listen
