2 Legal basis Agreement (1996) between the Governments of Croatia and B&H Regulating Water Management Relations – approved and ratified Grant Agreement (2008) concluded between the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and Ministry of Finance Project Agreement (2008) concluded between the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Hrvatske vode

3 Republic of Croatia Legal opinions have been obtained regarding the Subsidiary Agreement and the Project Agreement The Subsidiary Agreement has been concluded between Hrvatske vode and the Republic of Croatia, i.e. Ministry of Finance, which represents Croatia The Croatian Project Implementation Team has been appointed Bosnia and Herzegovina Requested an extension of the effectiveness deadline on December 24, 2008 New effectiveness deadline: March 8, 2009

4 To improve water management methods and capacities in both countries and strengthen international cooperation To improve the status of the Neretva and Trebišnjica Rivers in terms of achieving good ecological status of surface water To improve the status of the Neretva and Trebišnjica Rivers in terms of the chemical status of groundwater To preserve the biodiversity of aquatic and water- dependent ecosystems To improve active inclusion of the public in the planning and decision-making processes

6 Part A (Component 1) – Improved transboundary water resource management. This component encompasses the following: Improvement of the current institutional structure and organization related to the management of transboundary water resources Establishment of an integrated water information system and monitoring Preparation and adoption of the Framework Neretva and Trebišnjica River Basin Management Plan

7 Part B (Component 2) – Improved management of wetlands Improved management of sensitive ecosystems Development of a pilot scheme to mitigate salt water intrusion in the Neretva Delta Investments into water infrastructure Improved management of reservoirs and identification of environmental flows

8 Transboundary river basin on the territory of: The Republic of Croatia (RH) County of Dubrovnik-Neretva County of Split-Dalmatia Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) Federation BiH (FBiH) Herzegovina-Neretva canton West Herzegovina canton Herzeg-Bosnia canton Republic of Srpska (RS) Trebinje region The tributary of the Adriatic Sea richest in water on the territory of these two states
