Background 1999: The Federal Interdepartmental Forum on Construction Technology held a series of meetings Lack of understanding of Intelligent Building Technologies identified as an area of challenge and opportunity Industry Canada approached the Continental Automated Building Association (CABA) to determine industry interest for a technology roadmap CABA confirmed support and offered to coordinate the project

7 7. Completed Dec 2002 General Conclusions: A wide spectrum of technologies have been developed to automate all building system elements The pace of change is rapid. IBT bring many benefits - reduced operating costs - improved functionality and comfort Internet and communications improvements have helped Integrating all building systems provides the greatest benefits and poses the greatest challenges

Barriers: Lack of awareness is a major problem Reference projects are required Case studies that review costs and benefits Codes and standards do not support IBT Protocols need to be developed to facilitate integration and interoperability Integration requires the system to meet the reliability standards of its most demanding user Building equipment requires improved diagnostics Lack of trained staff, engineers, construction etc. Procurement methods pose problems

IMPACT STRATEGIC GUIDANCE FOR GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY ACTION Intelligent Buildings Council created to address challenges identified in TRM Task Force 1: Building Rating System (industry funded) Task Force 2: Middleware (industry funded) Task Force 3: Life-cycle cost (industry funded) Task Force 4: Best Practice Guide (Canadian and US Government Support) Task Force 5: Demonstration Projects (funding being sought) Increased Awareness and Interest in Intelligent Building Technologies Feedback is keeping the TRM evergreen Last update: March 2003 New Stakeholders Becoming Involved Precarn Workshop (Toronto, October 21/03) Council for Tall Buildings partnering to address security concern
