4 One day in 1800 when a wave hit the beach in the town, Cape Cod. People found a huge baby on the beach crying in a loud voice. They decided to name him Alfred Bulltop Stormalong, or Stormy. He loved to swim in the deep sea. 5 When Stormy was twelve, he was sent to Boston because he was too big for the town. But Stormy still felt too big in Boston. The buildings were also small. Because the sea was his best friend, he decided to become a sailor. The captain of the ship welcomed him. 6 One day the people on the ship tried to pull up the ship’s anchor but they couldn’t, so stormy jumped into the sea to solve the problem. After he jumped, they heard terrible sounds that came from the water. 38

7 He told them that he had to fight with an octopus to get the anchor up. Soon Stormy became a very famous sailor. Stormy was unhappy because he was still too large to stay on any ship and he was lonely. For years Stormy was the most famous sea captain in the world. When Stormy died, thousands of sailors came to see him. They were very sad, they cried and sang a song about him. 47

8 He decided to leave his seafaring life and walked as far from the sea as he could. When he reached Kansas, he decided to stay there and became the best farmer. But he was still unhappy and felt a great yearning for the sea. Stormy returned to Boston Harbor, but people were horrified when they saw how bad he looked. The sailors decided to build a ship that was big enough for him. Stormy was very happy and named his ship The Courser and sailed all over the world. 5 6
