Fun Lab Day! Colligative Properties Lab Freezing point depression is a colligative property. Adding a solute (salt) to a solvent (ice water) will lower the freezing point. Why is this important you may ask… Because, we can demonstrate this principle by MAKING ICE CREAM!
4
Ice Cream Lab Materials Each lab group needs: 1 quart-size ziploc bag 1 gallon-size ziploc bag 1 cup half and half 1 tsp vanilla 4 tsp sugar 1 cup rock salt
5
1.Combine the half & half, vanilla, and sugar in the smaller bag. Close the bag and seal the top with duct tape. 2.Put the small bag inside the larger bag and pack ice all around the smaller bag. 3.Add 1 cup of rock salt to the ice and seal the larger bag. 4.Take turns kneading the two bags together. This will break up any ice crystals that may form in the ice cream. Ice Cream Lab Procedure

5.It will take about 15-20 minutes to get a good consistency. 6.Once it’s done, remove the smaller bag and use a scissors to snip off one corner. 7.Evenly divide the ice cream between two plastic cups and ENJOY!!
