18 Addressing Mental Health Disparities in the African American Community  Recognize the facts:  Cultural biases against mental health professionals and health care professionals in general prevent many African Americans from accessing care, due to prior experiences with historical misdiagnoses, inadequate treatment and a lack of cultural understanding  African Americans are less likely to receive an accurate diagnoses than their Caucasian counterparts  Only 2% of Psychiatrist, 2% of Psychologists and 4% of Social Workers in the U.S. are African American  African Americans are much more likely to seek help through their primary care doctors as opposed to accessing specialty care http://www.nami.org/Content/ContentGroups/Multicultural_Support1/Fact_Sheets1/AfricanAmerican_ MentalHealth_FactSheet_2009.pdf 18/21

African American children comprise 45% of the public foster care population  African Americans comprise 40% of the homeless population and only 12% of the U.S. population. People experiencing homelessness are at a greater risk for developing a mental illness http://www.nami.org/Content/ContentGroups/Multicultural_Support1/Fact_Sheets1/AfricanAmerican_ MentalHealth_FactSheet_2009.pdf 19/21
