1 Expandable 4-channel EMG Data Logger DelSys, Boston, MA Innovation - The DelSys MyoMonitor™ is a 4-channel portable data logger designed to acquire and store surface electromyographic (EMG) signals effortlessly and reliably for up to 16 hours. The incentive for this project was provided by NASA when a need was expressed to monitor the muscular state of Astronauts during missions. The technology has direct applications in the commercial sector for rehabilitation, activity monitoring in home-care, performance monitoring of athletes and research in ergonomics. The device is being expanded to accept 8 channels and can be easily modified to store data from other physiological monitoring sensors. Accomplishments - The development of reliable hassle-free EMG electrodes, requiring no training or previous experience for use. This electrode design has transformed the science of Electromyography. - The ability to monitor EMG signals in remote locations anywhere in the world. All other EMG monitoring devices are designed to work in laboratory settings, limited by the need for bulky computers and an AC power source. - The development of a medical-grade double sided adhesive interface system for securing the EMG electrodes to the surface of the skin for long periods of time and in adverse conditions without compromising the physical condition of the skin in any way. - The company has recently established production and commercialization of the EMG electrodes in quantities of up to 1000 per year. DelSys Inc. has grown 400% in the past 3 years - The MyoMonitor™ compliments a line of desktop EMG equipment and accessories, including a two-channel, a 4-channel and an 8-channel system. All of these devices are currently commercially available. - DelSys Inc. has grown 400% in the past 3 years. Commercialization -Trade-Mark applied for “MyoMonitor™” within one year of product development. -The MyoMonitor™ entered it’s commercialization phase prior to Phase II contract completion. Upon contract completion, sales on the device were already logged. -Technology is covered by a patent which has been filed (Patent- pending.) -Primary target markets include: rehabilitation sciences, home-care monitoring, athletic performance monitoring, ergonomics. These market sectors provide a tremendous potential for a muscle performance monitoring system which is user friendly, can operate remotely and is completely portable. There are currently no other EMG systems available which can offer all of these advantages. -The MyoMonitor-4 is currently available from DelSys Inc. -The MyoMonitor-8 is expected to be available by November 2000. DelSys Inc. has successfully applied for and received 7 SBIR Phase I and Phase II Grants. -Outside initial capital provided by CEO. -DelSys Inc. is currently seeking corporate partners for entering the commercial market Government/Science Applications - The MyoMonitor was designed specifically for NASA’s needed to monitor muscle performance and fatigue in zero gravity environments. The device is unobtrusive and can easily be worn around the waist. An LCD screen allows the user to easily configure the device for a particular monitoring session, and offers a signal check to ensure the quality of the recorded signal. Batteries and memory cards can be easily swapped for continual operation. The data is reliably stored on a Flash media allowing analysis to be performed at other more convenient times and locations. - Other USG interests include soldier fatigue monitoring while training and soldier physiological monitoring while in combat. - We Estimate that NASA could achieve significant mission/project cost savings due applying the resulting technology from this SBIR innovation/product development.
