3 Lesson Purpose The purpose of this period of instruction is to introduce you to the M19A2 Rifle and the care and cleaning of this service rifle.

4 M16A2 Service Rifle A 5.56 mm, magazine fed, gas operated, air cooled, shoulder-fired weapon that can be fired either in automatic three-round bursts or semi- automatic single shots as determined by the position of the selector lever.

5 CHARACTERISTICS Caliber: –5.56mm Weight: –8.79 pounds (with 30 round magazine) Rifling: –1 / 7 twist Length: –Rifle with compensator 39 5/8 inches

6 CHARACTERISTICS Muzzle velocity: –Approx. 3,100 feet per second. Chamber pressure: – 52,000 psi. Cyclic rate of fire: –Approx. 800 rounds per minute.

7 CHARACTERISTICS Maximum effective rates of fire: –Semi-automatic: 45 rounds per minute. –Burst: 90 rounds per minute. Maximum effective range: –Individual/point targets: 550 meters. –Area targets: 800 meters. –Maximum range: 3534 meters.

14 Safety Features Before you can disassemble the rifle, you must ensure that the weapon is on safe. –Place selector lever to safe. –Remove Magazine

17 IMPORTANT: The Rifle is CLEAR and SAFE, ONLY when: THERE IS NO ROUND IN THE CHAMBER. THE MAGAZINE IS OUT. THE BOLD CARRIER IS LOCKED TO THE REAR. THE SELECTOR LEVEL IS IN THE SAFE POSITION

42 NOTE: Never move the brush back and forth inside the bore. Do not attempt to remove and discoloration caused by heat. Cleaning Lubricant Protectant (CLP) is the only lubricant authorized to be used on the M16A2.

52 FIRE ARMS SAFETY RULES Treat every weapon as if it were loaded. Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot. Keep a straight finger, off the trigger, until you are ready to fire. Keep weapon on safe until you are ready to fire.
