 Ebola outbreaks have been occurring in Africa off and on for a while (Hall)  Ebola is transmitted by direct contact with body secretions (including feces, saliva, urine, vomit, and semen) and contact with objects (needles and syringes) that have been contaminated with the blood or body fluids (Hall) Background

 In the 1995 outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, it produced fear in the community and caused the basic practice of medicine to be altered (Hall)  Ex: limited physical examinations because the instruments could not be easily infected (Hall)  Ex: Intravenous medication was not available due to lack of supplies and fear of staff being exposed to blood (Hall) Continue

 Similarly, American citizens fear the spread of Ebola (Kim)  Question: How does this affect America’s infrastructure? (Kim)  American’s fear of Ebola negatively affects the economy and science. Claim

 Nurses refuse to go to Africa to improve African healthcare because they fear that they will not be able to come back or be restricted once they come back.  Stocks are dropping  Ex: People choose not to travel out of the country in fear that they will be hindered due to the Ebola virus. The airline stock is dropping (Hamilton) Points

 The Ebola fear in Africa caused people to starve because farmers desert there farms due to running away from the disease (Hamilton).  The spread of Ebola will increase because the farmers do not know how to handle the diseased live stock and health care do not know handle patients in Ebola. The fear will increase even further. Then the economy will fall because mining industries will force to leave the area (Kim). Why is this important?
