A Labor Shortage in America? The English experienced a trial and error process when looking for a labor source Indians had a tendency to die or fight back Indentured servants ended up being competition for resources and economic competitors Blacks could be transported cheaply to the Americas and could be traded for goods as well

English Indentured Servants Indentured servants are being pulled to Virginia for several reasons: Overpopulation in England High unemployment Free paid passage to the New World

Arrival First Blacks are brought to Jamestown by Dutch in 1619 and are traded for food Like the English poor, Blacks are treated as indentured servants Tobacco planters preferred white indentured servants at first because Blacks are considered inferior

So why slavery? Indentured servants stop coming because life in England is better In 1676 a rebellion made up of released indentured servants scared tobacco planters Process towards slavery was slow and did not take off till 1670’s

So why slavery? Whites begin to slowly justify slavery of Blacks because they are non- Christians Laws are written that legalize slavery 1641, Massachusetts law legalizes slavery of Blacks 1662, Virginia law states that Blacks and their children are slaves
