CC-Aligned Assessments What are the changes? What are the implications? Children First Network 207

Background All NYS tests will be Common Core-aligned to mirror the CC-aligned instruction in our classrooms. Last year’s Grades 3-8 NYS tests were CC- aligned. ELA DATES April 1, 2 & 3, 2014 Math Dates April 30,2014 and May 1& 2 Children First Network 207

Test Format and Content 3 Books for all grades in ELA & Math ELA will encounter literary passages as well as more content rich Non-Fiction representing multiple subjects Math tests reflect the content emphases covering the major work of the grade For all grades math exams is 20 minutes shorter than 2013, but the number of questions also decreases Test Format & Content Children First Network 207

Six Shifts in Mathematics Assessments Shift 1: Focus Priority standards will be the focus of the assessments. Shift 2: Coherence Assessments will reflect the progression of content and concepts as depicted in the standards across grade levels. Shift 3: Fluency It will be assumed that students possess the required fluencies as articulated. Shift 4: Deep Understanding Each standard will be assessed from multiple perspectives. Shift 5: Application and Shift 6: Dual Intensity Students will be expected to know grade-level mathematical content with fluency and which concepts to employ to solve real-world problems. Children First Network 207

Shift 1: Balancing Informational & Literary Text – Passages will be authentic, and will be balanced between informational and literary texts. Shift 2: Knowledge in the Disciplines – Tests will contain knowledge-based questions about the informational text; students will not need outside knowledge to respond. Shift 3: Staircase of Complexity – Passage selection to be based on text complexity that is appropriate to grade level per Common Core Shift 4: Text-based Answers – Assessment questions will require students to marshal evidence from the text, including from paired passages. Shift 5: Writing from Sources – Writing emphasizes use of evidence from text to support an opinion. Shift 6: Academic Vocabulary – Students continuously build the transferable vocabulary they need to access grade-level complex texts. This can be done effectively by spiraling like content in increasingly complex texts. Children First Network 207

Priority Standards Kindergarten: Operations and Algebraic Thinking Grade 1: Number and Operations in Base 10 Grade 2: Number and Operations in Base 10 Grade 3: Operations and Algebraic Thinking Grade 4: Number and Operations ~ Fractions Grade 5: Number and Operations ~ Fractions More information on the Engage NY website (www.engageny.org) Children First Network 207

Required Fluencies Kindergarten: Add and subtract within 5 Grade 1: Add and subtract within 10 Grade 2: Add and subtract within 20; Add and subtract within 100 (pencil and paper) Grade 3: Multiply and divide within 100; Add and subtract within 1000 Grade 4: Add and subtract within 1,000,000 Grade 5: Multi ‐ digit multiplication Children First Network 207

Common Core-aligned Tests Tests will mirror the math content emphases (Major Works) of each grade – Major clusters will make up the majority of the assessments – Supporting and additional clusters will also be assessed Assessment questions will require students to: – Take multiple steps to solve. – Apply skills based on their understanding of mathematical vocabulary RATHER than simply being tested on that vocabulary. – Choose the appropriate tool (e.g. ruler, protractor) AND apply mathematical concepts in using that tool. 17 Math 2013-2014 Question Types Multiple Choice – Designed to incorporate mathematical content and practices in real- world applications – Assess both procedural and conceptual standards – Require the use of multiple skills and concepts – All distractors will be based on plausible mistakes and misunderstandings Short Response – Similar to past 2-point questions – complete a task and show your work – All descriptors for multiple choice apply to short response questions Extended Response – Similar to past 3-point questions – show your work in completing 2 or more tasks or one more extensive problem – Give students the opportunity to show their understanding of math procedures, conceptual understanding, and application. Children First Network 207

ELA 2013-2014 Question Types Multiple Choice – Designed to incorporate the instructional shifts of ELA – Assess content with an emphasis on structure, craft &language – Author’s purpose will be stressed over main idea and sequence Short Response – 2-point rubric – students may complete a graphic organizer and support opinion with details from text – Compare and contrast, analyze. All descriptors for multiple choice apply to short response & extended response questions Extended Response – 3-point Rubric – take a stance and support it with details from the text – Writing should clearly introduce a topic, connect ideas with details from text provide a conclusion that follows information presented and demonstrate grade appropriate command of conventions Children First Network 207

Sample Test Questions Look at the New York State Common Core-Aligned Question Samples Read each question and consider: – What is the math in the question? – How might you solve the problem? Talk at your tables about your responses Children First Network 207
